In the early stages of the DC Universe, there are several challenges that need addressing, starting with James Gunn‘s significant shift in Kryptonian lore within ‘Superman’. Instead of sending their son to Earth to safeguard it, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van allegedly plan conquest. This poses a problem for ‘Supergirl’, as it remains uncertain why Superman’s cousin is unable to inform him about the true purpose behind her arrival on Earth. On top of that, several characters in ‘Superman’ carry ominous shadows, hinting at complications for them within the series.
Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, briefly appears in the show Superman, using his spare time to confront Superman when news of his parents’ message goes public and Superman is seen on television. This short scene adds an interesting twist to the tension, but it leaves more questions unanswered, as Gunn’s DCU seems to be selectively adopting elements from the old canon. Although Peacemaker Season 2 will likely offer some explanation about how the main character gains significance in Superman’s world, Gunn understands that John Cena’s character’s backstory might be too complex for a small-screen format.
As a devoted cinephile, I recently had the pleasure of attending a riveting roundtable discussion with none other than James Gunn, the brilliant mind behind some of my favorite superhero films. Naturally, the topic of conversation turned to Peacemaker, that charismatic anti-hero from ‘The Suicide Squad.’ The question was posed: could we expect another feature-length film starring our beloved character, or is he forever tethered to HBO Max? Gunn’s response was nothing short of intriguing.
He admitted, “I do indeed have the solution to that query, but I’m unable to disclose it due to the Safran penalty, which carries a harsh consequence – the removal of one of my knuckles each time I reveal something. It hurts quite a bit, as Peter Safran employs a cigar cutter for this purpose.
James Gunn’s playful remark suggests he’s not ready yet to disclose the truth about the potential appearance of the 11th Street Kids or other shady characters in a movie. Instead of straightforwardly revealing that Peacemaker is only a TV character, Gunn chose to keep fans guessing, leaving room for possibility and excitement.
Is Another Suicide Squad Movie in the Cards at DC Studios?

Gunn’s initial entry into the DC Universe was “The Suicide Squad,” a film that received widespread acclaim but faced challenges at the box office. The COVID-19 pandemic played a major role in affecting its cinematic release, leading to a shift in the next part of the narrative to television. However, with Superman’s success showing that DC can generate as much, if not more, revenue than their competitors, the possibilities are endless. Gunn has been open about championing excellent concepts, and given his one story suited for Task Force X, who knows what other ideas he might have up his sleeve?
Following the revelations in Season 2 of Peacemaker, there’s a strong possibility that the team will encounter Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, and some other recognizable characters next. As for the specifics, director Gunn isn’t ready to disclose them just yet. However, it seems like John Cena might need to polish up his Peacemaker costume again, as another high-profile event could be on the horizon.
Peacemaker Season 2 drops on August 21, 2025.
