A Deadly New Avengers Team Already Has a Traitor Among Them (but Who Is It?)

The most lethal group of Avengers ever assembled will soon discover that one among them is secretly betraying the team. Originally titled “New Thunderbolts” in the Avengers comics, this new roster was intended as a spin-off from the movie “Thunderbolts.” Similar to how an asterisk in “Thunderbolts” concealed the team’s real name, New Thunderbolts was essentially a covert New Avengers series. Unlike traditional teams led by Captain America, Thor, or Captain Marvel, this one is composed of deadly assassins. And among these killers, one is fated to betray the New Avengers.

In issue #6 of “New Avengers,” penned by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Ton Lima, a fresh storyline unfolds where one team member will be unmasked as a betrayer. This group consists of six formidable characters from the Marvel Universe: Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Namor, Clea, Carnage, and the current Wolverine (Laura Kinney). Following their intense initial mission against the Killuminati, suspicion will fall upon one of these six individuals. Given the dubious nature of this team, fans might find it challenging to identify the traitor. The intrigue deepens as this double-crosser is also the mastermind behind the creation of the malevolent Killuminati, sinister clones of the original Illuminati.

Who Is the Traitor in the New Avengers?

The new version of the Avengers team, referred to as “New Avengers,” is considered a successor to Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch’s influential run on the same title from over a decade ago. Following the Winter Soldier’s failed attempt at reforming the Thunderbolts, which led to catastrophic consequences in the “One World Under Doom” tie-in series, the New Avengers are now in action. According to a Marvel press release, their initial mission finds them battling against the Killuminati. After their first encounter, this powerful alliance is forged, but the tension among its members is at an all-time high – particularly after they discover one of them is the mastermind behind the creation of the Killuminati!

In the second arc, Humphries expressed that he’s grown so fond of these characters and the team that he found himself thinking, ‘Why not introduce an internal conflict to test their bonds?’ The New Avengers and the Killuminati are heading towards a confrontation, but both teams harbor hidden secrets. One individual seems to be privy to the entire situation. Whose side will they ultimately support?

As a film enthusiast, I am beyond ecstatic to be working alongside Ton Lima on this project. His art truly leaps off the page, leaving me in absolute awe!

  • WHO IS THE TRAITOR?
  • A catastrophic piece of intel reveals that the mastermind behind the creation of the Killuminati is a member of the New Avengers! As the team musters to stop Iron Apex from creating more Illuminati doubles, paranoia threatens to tear them apart. Can this unstable team hope to survive a traitor in their midst?

Deciding which character among our heroes might be a traitor isn’t straightforward. Black Widow and Winter Soldier are unlikely suspects since they were the ones who initially formed our team. Namor, having been imprisoned for his terrorist activities during Jason Aaron’s Avengers series, also seems less probable. Given that Clea is the Sorcerer Supreme of the Dark Dimension and Carnage is a notorious serial killer, even with Eddie Brock as a host, they too could be ruled out as potential traitors with high certainty.
