If you’re captivated by the melodious soundtrack, relaxing voyage, and cozy environment of “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” but find yourself in need of something comparable while waiting for the second season to drop, I highly recommend diving into another series: “Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf!” Given that “Frieren” exudes a lot of cheerful energy as summer winds down, “Spice and Wolf” is an excellent choice to help you transition into the fall season with its harvest festival and abundance of apples!
In contrast to Frieren’s adventures that occasionally involved intense battles with demons and dragons during their generally laid-back voyage, Spice and Wolf offers Lawrence and Holo a more relaxed, realistic journey. A unique aspect of Spice and Wolf is its intricate and believable trade economy heavily centered around mercantilism and currency. If you appreciate a story that combines a captivating romantic subplot with a comfortable, atmospheric setting in an only slightly fantastical, ancient world, then you should definitely check out Spice and Wolf.
Wolf, Economics, and Apples
In the course of his travels, merchant Kraft Lawrence arrives at the quaint village of Pasloe, which is currently bustling with activity due to its annual harvest celebration. According to local lore, a villager had struck a deal with the wolf spirit Holo centuries past, securing the village’s abundant wheat harvests each year as a reward. Over time, as the townsfolk lost faith, the story transformed into a mere custom, with the deity being dismissed as fictional.
On the brink of departing for his next location, Lawrence stumbles across a woman sleeping among his furs – she’s naked with ears and a tail reminiscent of an animal, claiming to be Holo, the divine wolf spirit herself. Touched by her wish to return to the frozen north, she persuades Lawrence to let her join him on his travels. In exchange, she promises to contribute her quick intellect and negotiation expertise to their shared income. Throughout their relaxing voyage, Lawrence and Holo seize economic opportunities that arise along the way, testing both their sharp business acumen and their evolving bond.
A show revolving around a clever, quirky, often overlooked female lead of advanced age embarks on a relaxed, mystical voyage. Fans of Frieren will undoubtedly appreciate this comparable series! The 2024 remake, Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf, is an update of the original 2008 anime based on Isuna Hasekura’s ongoing light novel series with illustrations by Juu Ayakura titled simply Spice and Wolf. The anime has already had one complete season, with a second season confirmed to be in development (a sequel that promises an exciting continuation)!
In contrast to Frieren, which builds its fantasy setting in a traditional manner, Spice and Wolf opts for a more realistic approach. Unlike many other anime that overlook the complexities of economics, this series delves into the practical aspects, providing insights on various currencies, exchange rates, negotiations, and the risks involved in such financial transactions. The narrative is centered around trade and commerce within the world, with characters and interactions highlighting the intricacies of these economic systems.
Although an economic-focused narrative might seem dull at first glance, this series adds a captivating twist. With Holo’s clever ingenuity and playful nature, coupled with Lawrence’s wise pragmatism, they create an unusual, intelligent partnership. Their knack for financial advantage frequently works in their favor, but it can also lead them into trouble, as not every merchant is receptive to their cunning strategies.
Despite Holo’s mighty god-like wolf form being formidable, even she cannot muscle through money matters. Consequently, Holo must lean on her vast wisdom and cleverness to aid Lawrence in his transactions. Interestingly, while she frequently transforms into a diminutive human shape, her insatiable hunger remains colossal, providing benefits such as getting to savor delicious meals. Despite moments in the series that seem educational, it’s also amusing to witness Holo ravenously consume a bushel of apples.
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
