Masters of the Universe Reboot Casts SNL Legend as Roboto

The ensemble of the upcoming “Masters of the Universe” reboot is expanding, with Kristen Wiig now joining the cast. According to recent reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Wiig will provide the voice for Roboto, the mechanical warrior, in the live-action adaptation. Known as a Heroic Warrior, Roboto was constructed by Man-at-Arms, played by Idris Elba, and is distinctly recognizable due to its translucent metal body, allowing viewers to see its internal mechanisms, and its single arm, equipped with changeable hands. Historically, the character of Roboto has been voiced by male actors, such as Justin Long and Alan Oppenheimer; however, this time around, Wiig will bring a new dimension to the role.

In the highly anticipated live-action revival of “Masters of the Universe,” a stellar ensemble graces the screen. Headed by the rising talent Nicholas Galitzine portraying the sword-brandishing prince, the cast includes Jared Leto stepping into Skeletor’s formidable role, Camila Mendes as Teela, Morena Baccarin embodying The Sorceress, James Purefoy taking on King Randor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Charlotte Riley becoming Queen Marlena, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson starring as Malcolm/Fisto, Idris Elba transforming into Duncan/Man-at-Arms. The movie also features Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Bjornsson embodying Goat Man, Kojo Attah portraying Tri-Klops, Sasheer Zamata bringing Suzie to life, John Xue Zhang portraying Ram-Man, and Christian Vunipola starring as Hussein.

The remake of “Masters of the Universe” completed filming in June and revealed Galitzine as He-Man for the first time. This movie, directed by Travis Knight, is inspired by the 1980s toy line and animated series. It revolves around Prince Adam of Eternia, portrayed by Galitzine, who transforms into the powerful He-Man using the Power Sword. He-Man then teams up with his diverse group of allies to attempt to thwart the evil plans of Skeletor in order to safeguard their world.

The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film will be the second one produced, coming 35 years after the original 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, Frank Langella as Skeletor, and Meg Foster as Evil-Lyn. Unfortunately, the initial movie was met with poor reviews and currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 21%. To add to its woes, it grossed just $17 million globally, earning $4.8 million during its opening weekend. Despite attempts by Amazon MGM Studios to revitalize the franchise, they nearly secured Noah Centineo for the lead role, but plans didn’t materialize. In the end, it was Lewis Galitzine who was cast as the legendary character.

Based on a screenplay by Chris Butler, who has previously written scripts for ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, Masters of the Universe is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 5, 2026. This film is a collaborative effort between Mattel Films and Amazon MGM Studios and follows the release of animated shows like Masters of the Universe: Revelation and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power on Netflix, which have revived this cherished franchise. To prepare for the reboot, fans of the original Masters of the Universe movie can now stream it on Amazon Prime Video.
