Many theories about Star Wars often turn out to be as misguided as Anakin Skywalker’s act of killing younglings. Contrary to popular beliefs, Rey is neither Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter nor a reincarnation of the Chosen One. In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, she was initially depicted as ‘no one’. However, this was later clarified in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ that she is, in fact, the daughter of a Palpatine clone. Although delving too deeply into this subject could lead to a can of worms, it’s worth noting that Rey’s lineage isn’t the only intriguing aspect of Star Wars that sparks speculation. Even the smallest detail, such as an empty chair in a meeting, can ignite passionate debates among fans.
It’s risky business when Star Wars decides to reinterpret scenes from the original trilogy, given their hallowed status. However, Lucasfilm doesn’t shy away from innovation, going so far as to bring Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi together again after their encounter on Mustafar. The way they tie Star Wars: Andor and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to Star Wars: A New Hope using a minor character may not be overtly bold, but it’s worth mentioning.
The Latest Projects About the Empire’s Reign Introduce an Important Imperial Figure
Star Wars has a strong affinity for the time period spanning from the end of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” to the beginning of “A New Hope”. Shows like “Star Wars Rebels” and games such as “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” are set within this 19-year gap, but they pale in comparison to projects like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Star Wars: Andor”. These latter productions delve into the events leading up to the destruction of the Death Star. It is revealed that Director Orson Krennic is a key figure driving this super weapon’s development, as he enlists Galen Erso for the project and coerces the scientist out of retirement when progress stalls. All of Krennic’s efforts, including the disruption of Ghorman, are aimed at securing a prominent position in the Imperial hierarchy alongside Grand Moff Tarkin.
The oversight by Krennic, unnoticed by him, is the swelling Rebellion that thrives under the Empire’s very gaze. His subordinates, such as Dedra Meero, prove careless with classified information, granting Cassian Andor and his team on Yavin 4 a valuable opportunity. Utilizing this gap, Andor and his crew manage to breach the Imperial stronghold on Scarif and send the Death Star blueprints to the Rebel armada. Ironically, Krennic himself meets his demise at the hands of the very device he diligently pursued for operation. Some viewers found it peculiar that in “A New Hope,” Krennic is not acknowledged, leading them to devise their own theories to incorporate him into the narrative. Contrasting Director Krennic, Star Wars enthusiasts can relish in the results of their creative endeavors.
Director Krennic’s Star Wars Legacy Is a Tragic One
In simpler terms, the first Star Wars movie, “A New Hope,” has been analyzed by fans for nearly half a century. One intriguing detail they’ve often noticed is an empty chair in the Death Star’s conference room during a discussion about the Rebellion’s threat. Darth Vader and Tarkin enter the room later, reassuring everyone that there’s no cause for concern. However, Vader doesn’t sit down, leading fans to speculate that the vacant seat might belong to a deceased Imperial officer, possibly General Krennic, explaining why the meeting seems incomplete. Since “A New Hope” doesn’t mention any missing Imperial characters, this is just a fan theory.
The concept remained merely a fan speculation until the emergence of the 2017 anthology novel “From a Certain Point of View“. In the short story “Fully Operational” by Beth Revis, General Cassio Tagge recalls his entrance to the Death Star post the Battle of Scairf and his reflections on Krennic. He recollects their final encounter in the room, where Krennic had proposed employing the weapon against something more significant than Jedha City. Admittedly, this line of reasoning led to Krennic’s demise, yet Tagge cannot dismiss the intense drive for power that his late colleague exhibited.
