Wolverine Reintroduces a Fan Favorite Mutant

Originally groomed to be the killer X-23, Laura Kinney now assumes the role of Wolverine, prioritizing the protection of mutants above everything else. She’s been diligently performing her duties, often working solo and attempting to stay concealed as much as possible, given her vibrant attire. However, this has left her apart from one of comics’ most cherished secondary characters – her sister Gabby. For the initial installments of Laura’s new comic series, as well as a considerable period in Marvel’s broader narrative, Gabby was absent. But with the release of Laura Kinney Wolverine #9, this gap has been filled, and Gabby is back! Regrettably, she returns accompanied by a significant issue.

Gabby Is Melting?

In the previous issue, Laura returned home to find Gabby waiting on the porch, with half of her face’s skin having mysteriously melted away. Following their successful collaboration with Xarus, the son of Dracula, in combating a sudden surge of vampire-related issues during the “Blood Hunt” event, Gabby chose to stick around and assist the half-vampire in tackling more supernatural menaces. The duo’s unique talent for vanquishing undead foes led them to the Ossuary in Paris, where they clashed with the sorceress Strega and her army of demon-vampire robots. To Strega, who regarded the transformed tourists as her own offspring, Gabby’s attempt to interfere was an affront she could not forgive. Consequently, Strega and her allies disappeared, but not before casting a curse upon Gabby, leading to the skin-loss incident. Tragically, the curse continued to spread, eventually claiming her arms as well.

Laura scolded Xarus for involving her younger sister in trouble, believing it was her duty to protect Gabby. She initially showed hostility towards Xarus, who claimed he only wanted to assist, not cause harm. Reluctantly, Laura agreed with this. She then mentioned someone who could help cleanse Gabby of whatever affliction she had. Leaving their home guarded by a cute wolverine named Jonathan, the group set off for the Sanctum Sanctorum to meet Clea Strange. Upon entering, Clea allowed the Kinney sisters inside but refused Xarus entry due to Sanctum rules. Inside the Sanctum, Clea cast a spell to remove Gabby’s curse, but warned her of potential complications. As expected, a complication soon arose when Gabby started coughing up slime that turned into more demon-vampires and a witch called Strega.

Trouble in the Sanctum Sanctorum

Clea exclaimed that it seemed like Gabby was cursed by Strega possessing her as a vessel, which allowed them and their minions to move past protective barriers. When Strega and her gang attacked, the opponents found themselves not wanting to be on the wrong side, as they were up against two Wolverine clones and a Sorcerer Supreme. However, the enemies were merely a distraction for Strega. She managed to find an artifact called the Sphere of Shooyen, which released magical threads that bound the heroes, tightening their grip as they tried to break free. Strega then announced that for attempting to take her children away, she would use Gabby as a meal for her swiftly regenerating blood. Unfazed by vampire norms, Xarus barged into the room, but arrived too late to prevent Strega from taking Gabby with her.

Just as before, Gabby seems to have disappeared from us once more, potentially for good. The series featuring Gabby and Jonathan has been a delight, yet there were moments that seemed overly dramatic, such as Laura’s intense anger towards Xarus taking care of her sister. I must admit, I found it slightly confusing how Xarus managed to enter the Sanctum Sactorum, given his previous inability to enter buildings without the owner’s permission. However, overall, it was an enjoyable read. I can’t wait for the next issue to see how they save Gabby!
