A KPop Demon Hunters Sequel Sounds Great (But I Need a Prequel)

The series titled “KPop Demon Hunters” has gained immense popularity worldwide, and it’s easy to see why. I’ve watched it numerous times, and I’m certain many others share my sentiment – this show seems designed for endless re-watching without ever growing old. It masterfully combines humor with gravity, preventing the material from feeling overly heavy, and the visuals are nothing short of breathtaking. To top it off, the music is phenomenal, with the soundtrack constantly playing in my ears. However, amidst all its praiseworthy aspects, I find myself pondering a question that only a prequel could possibly answer fully.

The series “KPop Demon Hunters” primarily focuses on the battle between Huntrix and Saja Boys, and their scheme to nourish Gwi-ma with souls. However, it fails to delve into the background of Rumi, particularly her origins as a half-demon hunter born to a human mother. Based on speculation, one might imagine that Rumi’s story shares similarities with her relationship with Jinu, but with key differences in development and outcomes. In light of this, I believe that a prequel centered around Rumi’s mother could offer valuable insights into the world of hunters by exploring the circumstances leading to her giving birth to a half-demon child.

We’re Left With Unanswered Questions About Rumi

In my excitement for KPop Demon Hunters, it doesn’t take long to uncover an intriguing detail about Rumi – distinctive markings of a demon adorn her arms. As the series unfolds, these markings seem to be growing, a fact underscored by a few flashbacks revealing that they once covered a smaller area of her skin. This unsettling development can be traced back to Rumi’s father, who is revealed to be a demon himself. Given that we already know her mother was a hunter, this new revelation about Rumi’s paternal lineage certainly stirs up quite a few questions.

In the series KPop Demon Hunters, although there’s an almost romantic development between characters Jinu and Rumi, romance isn’t the main focus. Instead, I think it was smart to turn this element into more of a subplot, as it allows for a stronger narrative that revolves around the relationships between Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. This near-romance offers an intriguing insight: some demons still experience emotions, even if they may not be as human-like as before. Interestingly, this suggests that Jinu might have more humanity left in him than other demons.

In summary, considering the context, it’s plausible to propose that some demons might possess more traces of humanity than others. These demons may retain distinct memories from their human lives, allowing them to maintain a connection with their human side. It’s likely that Rumi’s father was one such demon who resembled Jinu in this regard, holding onto memories from his past that kept him human. Given the circumstances, it’s suspected that he met his end at the hands of the Sunlight Sisters, the hunters of his time. Had the story been expanded into a full anime series instead of a movie, we could have delved deeper into this backstory through a flashback arc. However, since that’s not what happened, a prequel is necessary to fully explore and clarify these events.

Rumi Could Have Led to Her Mother’s Death

The film “KPop Demon Hunters” does not disclose the reason behind Rumi’s mother’s demise. Instead, it reveals that she passed away when Rumi was still an infant. Celine, who had vowed to safeguard what Rumi’s deceased mother left behind, adopted and raised her. However, Celine appeared unaware of Rumi being half-demon, as suggested by her remark that she “didn’t expect a child like you.” The movie incorporates elements of the supernatural and fantasy, which might suggest that Rumi may have unwittingly contributed to her mother’s death, but in a way that it was not entirely her fault.

In many narratives featuring mixed species characters, like humans and demons, it’s often depicted that offspring from such unions possess unique challenges. If this is the case in ‘KPop Demon Hunters’, then various plot elements become more understandable. For instance, Rumi’s mother understands she won’t be able to raise Rumi herself, and realizes that other hunters may view Rumi as an anomaly or a problem. As a result, she takes precautions and asks Celine to safeguard whatever remains after her passing, knowing that it will be Rumi whom she is entrusting to Celine.

My theory about Rumi having a demonic nature isn’t something I can definitively prove, but it seems reasonable given the similar dynamics in other fictional universes. The only way to fully understand what led to this development would be through a prequel or sequel that delves into flashbacks. Needless to say, I’m eagerly anticipating the continued expansion of the KPop Demon Hunters universe!
