As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder over the possibility of upcoming Pokémon remakes. Four generations have already experienced this nostalgia trip, and there’s no sign of them halting the trend. With each passing year, these classic games age gracefully, making them even more deserving, in the eyes of The Pokémon Company, of a second chance. This cyclic process could almost be considered an everlasting game design loop, as they continue to develop new generations while polishing older ones occasionally.
Generation 9 was unveiled in 2022, but considering this never-ending cycle, it’s reasonable to expect a remake at some point further down the line. So, with this thought in mind, let me share my picks for Pokémon generations that deserve a remake on the Nintendo Switch 2.
1. Generation 1
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the timeless, inaugural era of Pokémon that has been absent for far too long. While there have been remakes to satiate our cravings, it’s high time we revisit the origins with Red and Blue, tailored to resonate with contemporary audiences.
Unfortunately, tracking down an old Game Boy or compatible consoles to relive these classics can be quite a challenge. With this in mind, I firmly believe that it’s well past due for GameFreak to re-release these cherished games, making them accessible to a new generation of gamers who didn’t have the chance to experience the magic when they were first introduced.
Here’s an intriguing thought: We could make something special here. Reviving the original versions would certainly spark excitement. After all, there’s nothing quite like the nostalgic rush while gaming, and revisiting the first Pokémon game would be a unique experience. Yet, this also presents an opportunity for modernization.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but imagine the sheer excitement of reimagining this classic game in a whole new light. Instead of a simple remake, we’re talking about creating something closer to a brand-new adventure. Picture it: a fully realized 3D world with state-of-the-art graphics and gameplay that would push boundaries and captivate gamers worldwide. Now, I’m not saying it wouldn’t be difficult – the challenges are immense – but if given the chance, I truly believe this beloved Gen 1 game deserves to be more accessible than it currently is. It’s high time we shared its magic with a new generation of players.
2. Generation 5
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got a hunch that it’s Generation 5’s turn next in our gaming journey. There’s been plenty of chatter suggesting this generation could be the one we delve into post the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl release. But remember, it’s still not officially confirmed yet.
The popular video game, Pokémon: Black and White, hasn’t been re-released since its peak popularity in 2010. With a total of 15 years passed, it’s high time for this beloved generation, featuring notable characters like Victini, Zebstrika, Throh, and Chandelure, to be remade rather than postponed until later.
Instead of just having some features from the Indigo Disk DLC, it’s time for a complete remake since all generations from 1 to 4 have received full revamps and even Generation 6 was indirectly included via the “Let’s Go!” games. Therefore, a full-fledged remake would be appropriate now.
3. Generation 7
Generation 7 stands out for several significant factors. Initially, the games “Sun” and “Moon” are cherished installments within the Pokémon series. Moreover, this generation marked a substantial shift in the gameplay mechanics. Previously, regions featured static forms for existing Pokémon, but with Pokémon’s adventure in Alola, we now see various forms of Pokémon appearing throughout different regions.
These games feature some of the most renowned and legendary Pokémon, many of which are iconic. The Alola region remains one of the coolest and most enjoyable to explore even today, despite the fact that these games have been around for quite some time. Unfortunately, they may be difficult to find and play in 2025 due to their scarcity.
Indeed, given its merit, it’s long overdue for a fresh take. Regrettably, considering the frequency of remakes and where Pokémon Company stands, we likely won’t see a Generation 7 remake anytime soon. However, it’s indisputable that a remake is needed at some point because it deserves this update. Although a remake was released in 2017, that was nearly a decade ago, and this generation is more than deserving of multiple updates.
4. Generation 2
Just like Generation 1, Generation 2 is due for some attention. It hasn’t been updated since the release of HeartGold and SoulSilver on the Nintendo DS back in 2009, which are widely regarded as some of the finest remakes in the entire series. Therefore, it would be wonderful to bring these classics up-to-date for modern gamers.
Although Nintendo Switch Online offers access to many systems where past Pokémon games were originally released, it’s unfortunate that only used versions of those games can be found, as they tend to be quite pricey. Additionally, locating the necessary consoles can be challenging if you don’t already own them.
It seems unlikely that classic Pokémon games will become part of Nintendo Switch Online, so our best option to revisit them might be through remakes. Given this, even titles that have already been remade in the past could benefit from a second remake or an upgrade for today’s Switch 2 players.
