What’s The Story of Good Boy?
2025 has already hailed Good Boy as one of its top horror movies, offering a unique spin on the haunted house tale. Being a devoted fan, I find myself drawn into the heartwarming story of Indy, a faithful canine companion. According to the film’s tagline, Indy and his owner Todd relocate to a secluded family home, but soon uncover ominous forces lurking in the dark corners. With Todd’s safety at stake, the courageous dog is compelled to take a stand and defend the person he cherishes most from these sinister entities.
As a devoted cinephile, I must admit that a canine as the main character in a movie might seem unconventional, but director Leonberg and co-writer Alex Cannon have an intriguing perspective on this: A dog’s responses to its environment mirrors the shared anxiety that pet owners feel about their beloved companions navigating the world.
The filmmaker mentioned in Deadline shared that he’s often pondered about why dogs might bark at nothing or seem to focus on empty spaces. This idea served as a foundation for the movie, which ultimately morphed into a haunted house tale. He noted that working with children and animals can be tricky, but to overcome this obstacle, the entire production was designed around a single dog as the central character.
I had the privilege of debuting at SXSW in March, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Interestingly enough, my lead role, Indy, became the first recipient of the “Howl of Fame” award at SXSW for his remarkable performance. The jury commended me for presenting a truly authentic viewpoint within the horror genre, delivering a chilling yet natural portrayal. Critics have lauded the film for its originality and execution, as well as its ability to balance emotional depth with suspenseful and terrifying moments.
