Fans can now enjoy James Gunn’s summer blockbuster “Superman” in high definition at home, giving them a closer look at details that might have been missed during theater screenings. Keen-eyed viewers have noticed an intriguing detail that has sparked debate about the authenticity of Jor-El and Lara’s message to their son, urging him to rule Earth and carry on the Kryptonian lineage. However, a different Easter egg discovered by fans also deserves attention as it pays homage to one of “Superman”‘s bravest characters in an unmistakable way.
At the end of the movie, when Superman goes back to the Fortress of Solitude, there’s a touching moment where his old messages from Krypton have been replaced by home videos from Smallville with his adoptive parents. Among these videos, one of the Superman Robots is seen reading a copy of The Daily Planet newspaper. This scene might be overlooked if you blink, but when viewers paused to read the headline, it evoked strong emotions in everyone. Supergirl/Kara Zor-El then appears, making an emotional impact, immediately following this brief scene.
Superman Honors Dead Character in Final Scene
Title Rewrite: “Mali of Mali’s Falafels to be Honored as Metropolis’ Unsung Hero”: Known for his courage and kindness, Mali was the street food vendor who aided Superman during the kaiju attack unleashed by Lex Luthor. Using facial recognition technology, Lex’s team identified him, and when Superman was imprisoned in Luthor’s pocket universe, Mali became an instrument to force information out of the Man of Steel. In a chilling act, Lex threatened Mali with a gun, but in a remarkable act of bravery, Mali pleaded with Superman not to reveal anything that could harm him. Tragically, Luthor cold-bloodedly took Mali’s life, leaving Superman and Metamorpho devastated. It was Mali’s murder that led Metamorpho to abandon using Kryptonite on Superman, and together, they managed a daring escape from the pocket universe, marked by one of Superman‘s most spectacular special effects displays.
In the midst of all Superman’s grand battles, shocking plot turns, and emotional scenes, it’s simple to overlook Mali’s sacrifice. However, filmmaker James Gunn subtly honors the character by featuring him on the cover of The Daily Planet, a nod that recognizes Mali without diverting from Superman’s storyline in the movie or hindering its pace. What makes this scene even more heartwarming is the author – it’s not prominently displayed, but the byline clearly indicates Clark Kent as the writer.
It’s poignant and sad that Clark, himself, composed the tribute for Mali. This act could be a heavy burden on his conscience since Luthor targeted Mali because he was helping Superman. Even though witnessing Mali’s death would have been devastating, writing about him serves to highlight Superman’s power to inspire compassion and do what’s right. Moreover, by having Lois interview Superman instead of himself, Clark’s character also evolves in the movie. He becomes more considerate of his actions, striving for a higher moral ground than before, proving that you don’t need superpowers to impact the world positively.
