DC Just Set Up a Deep Cut Superman Villain Nobody Would Expect (Twice)

In no question about it, Superman is the emblematic character of the DC Universe. His standalone film establishes the mood for the entire series, delivering messages of hope and bravery amidst insurmountable challenges. The need for Superman to maintain a strong façade stems from the fact that sinister forces are out to get him. At the helm of these villains is Lex Luthor, CEO of LuthorCorp, who perceives Superman’s presence as a stark reminder of humanity’s vulnerability. Luthor dedicates his efforts to weakening the titular hero, tarnishing his image and creating clones in an attempt to prove how interchangeable he is. Yet, despite using every weapon at his disposal, Luthor ultimately fails against Superman.

Despite his supposed victory, Superman’s responsibilities aren’t over yet. There are certainly more villains lurking in the shadows ready to test him. Interestingly, the premiere episode of Peacemaker Season 2 intentionally sets up a hint about a villain that emerges from Superman, potentially laying the groundwork for one of Superman’s most unanticipated enemies to transition to the big screen.

Peacemaker Season 2 Makes a Big Deal About Imps

After Luthor reveals a message from Jor-El to the public, Superman finds himself contemplating various paths forward. He discusses these with Lois Lane, who drops by to see her boyfriend while the Justice League engages an enigmatic creature outside their window – initially alarming, but Superman clarifies it’s just a dimensional sprite posing no threat. They continue their discussion, and the sprite is never mentioned again in Superman. However, Gunn subtly hints that he intends for the DCU audience to stay alert, as he introduces these sprites or imps again in another of his projects.

In the premiere of Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” Christopher Smith stumbles upon a gateway to an alternate dimension hidden within his father’s personal universe. After venturing through this door, he finds himself in a world where his brother and father are still alive and are members of a powerful superhero squad. Auggie and Keith then invite Chris for a chat over drinks, reminiscing about their past exploits. It is revealed that Auggie cherishes the moment when he came home to find Chris playing with a pack of mischievous sprites inside the house. The trio shares laughs about this incident, including Keith’s discovery of a deceased imp in a car; however, they remain unaware of the true threat these beings may pose.

Mister Mxyzptlk Might Be Setting the Stage for His DCU Arrival

Without a doubt, Mister Mxyzptlk, an imp from the fifth dimension, is undeniably one of the most renowned characters in DC Comics. In early Superman comics, he would pop up in Metropolis, using his extraordinary power to manipulate reality to trouble the Man of Steel. Over the years, this mischievous character has become so popular that he has made appearances in various forms of media. Notably, Mister Mxyzptlk has been featured in several animated productions and live-action series like Smallville, Superboy, and Supergirl. As for the future, it seems there’s a chance we might see him again on screen, and perhaps he won’t be alone when he returns.

In the debut season of “Peacemaker,” a character named Bat-Mite is introduced, an imp who is fanatically in love with Batman. He often constructs bizarre situations for the Dark Knight to navigate, hoping to enjoy watching him solve them. Although director James Gunn has been vague about Bat-Mite’s role within the DC Universe, it’s possible that both Batman and Superman may encounter beings from the fifth dimension in the upcoming storylines.
