Peacemaker Star Breaks Silence on Season 2’s Controversial Justice League Retcon

The second season premiere of “Peacemaker” caused quite a stir, leading some viewers to believe that the Snyderverse might be over for good. Many recall that the show’s first season continued James Gunn’s work on DC Comics’ “The Suicide Squad,” and although it was part of the DC Extended Universe, changes were expected due to Gunn’s new role. In this new season, we discover how Peacemaker enters a new world via a door, eliminates his alternate version, and disrupts the last remnants of the Justice League from the DC movies.

In a surprising change for fans of Season One, the meeting with the original Justice League is not as depicted anymore. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash are no longer present, and there’s no signature fish joke directed at Aquaman this time around. Instead, the new ensemble introduced in James Gunn’s Superman series, known as the Justice Gang, have taken their places alongside Superman and Supergirl. This unexpected shift left some fans in awe, but it also caught the cast off guard.

As per an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, comedian and actor Steve Agee shared the moment he discovered the change and his initial reaction after it was unveiled on the script.

I discovered the details when I received the initial script for season two. It stated that there would be a recap titled ‘previously on’ before the opening scene where the 11th Street Kids were leaving at the end of season one finale. However, upon seeing Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and both Superman and Supergirl in silhouette instead, I was taken aback because this appears to be a completely different ending, suggesting an entirely new universe.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In his critique, Agee points out that episodes 7-9 from Season Two felt like an entirely fresh season of the show, as if we had suddenly been transported into a new narrative realm. Additionally, he highlighted that Gunn wasn’t initially slated to lead DC Studios following the conclusion of Peacemaker‘s first season.

In essence, James found himself in a tricky situation during season one as there were no hints suggesting his future leadership at DC Studios. However, when he assumed control and desired to establish a fresh universe and timeline, he felt compelled to rectify this by connecting Peacemaker season one with Superman. In my opinion, this was the most straightforward approach for him to take.

The remainder of our conversation offers an entertaining journey, shedding light on John Economos’ character, and shares how working on Peacemaker turned out to be “one of the most peculiar shooting experiences I’ve ever had.
