James Gunn expresses his desire to revisit and re-shoot parts of Peacemaker’s first season, aiming for a closer alignment with his revamped DC Universe, but laments that budget constraints prevent him from doing so at present.
In simpler terms, after the release of The Ties That Grind, the first episode of season 2, both the filmmaker and the co-CEO of DC Studios addressed the ongoing confusion among fans regarding a brief appearance of the Justice League at the end of season 1.
In that moment, the setting showcased Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. This positioning clearly placed John Cena’s character, Peacemaker, in the original DC Extended Universe timeline.
In this new continuity, the appearance of the Justice League in season 2 is reimagined as a gathering of the Justice Gang. This revised scene features Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, along with hinted appearances by David Corenswet’s Superman, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, and Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific.

When asked about the possibility of reshooting parts of the first season, Gunn stated to TV Insider: “Regrettably, reworking numerous minor details across Season 1 would be quite costly. Instead, I’d prefer to allocate that budget towards additional CGI sequences featuring our superhero characters.
He hasn’t definitively excluded that possibility in the future, though. “At some stage, I’d enjoy making significant changes to it, similar to what George Lucas did with his Star Wars movies,” Gunn said, alluding to how George Lucas made numerous revisions to his original films over time.
Gunn clarified that the updated DC Universe’s storyline commences with the series Creature Commandos, the upcoming Superman film, and Peacemaker’s second season. He added that while there may be a slight change in Season 1, they are not planning on re-shooting the entire first season at this stage, but rather focusing on the adjustment made.
Regardless, his statements imply that if the DCU expands as expected, no idea is beyond reach. Gunn has demonstrated a readiness to rework past projects to fit his current vision, and he’s hinted that he would gladly expand Peacemaker season 1 if funding allowed, drawing a comparison to George Lucas’ additional content creation for Star Wars.
For now, the revised Season 2 premiere serves as a playful concession. It maintains elements cherished by viewers, yet pushes Peacemaker decisively towards the forward-looking direction of the DC Universe.
