America’s Got Talent Frontrunner Had The Option To Skip Performing Live Due To Food Poisoning. Why He Decided To Risk It All Anyway

In the 2025 television lineup, the much-anticipated live shows for America’s Got Talent Season 20 have finally arrived. Fans have eagerly been waiting after weeks of pre-recorded auditions, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a challenging time for contestant Jourdan Blue. He had been a strong contender throughout the season, having received the golden buzzer in the premiere, amassing millions of online views, and hearing his name chanted by the audience during the live quarterfinals results episode. However, he fell ill with food poisoning before his first live performance on AGT and bravely decided to perform despite his condition.

In New Orleans, the performing artist confessed after his live performance of “Biblical” by Calum Scott that he had vomited three times prior to stepping on stage. The following night’s broadcast showed just how close he came to not being able to perform. Medical personnel were required to assist him, and it wasn’t until the last moment before his turn that it was decided whether he would be well enough for a live show. (You can stream both the performance and results episode with a Peacock subscription now.)

Indeed, he did take the stage live, but his demeanor seemed less vibrant compared to his initial performance on America’s Got Talent. A gloss of sweat was visible, not attributable to anxious nerves or powerful stage lights. This decision was daring, given that he had a limited time to persuade viewers to vote for him to advance. Post-performance, he revealed:

1) Instead of “he did in fact perform live,” you could say: “Indeed, he took the stage live.”
2) Rather than “looking less animated,” use: “his demeanor seemed less vibrant.”
“A gloss of sweat was visible, not attributable to anxious nerves or powerful stage lights.”
4) For “considering that he had just a few minutes to convince viewers from home to vote him through,” consider: “This decision was daring, given that he had a limited time to persuade viewers to vote for him to advance.”
5) Instead of “post-performance, he shared,” you could say: “Post-performance, he revealed.

I’m pleased that I managed to step out and deliver a performance, even though I’m not feeling my best. I truly hope my efforts were sufficient to advance.

Thankfully, pushing through the queasiness proved worthwhile. Out of three performers, he was chosen for the semifinals thanks to audience votes, unlike some who were unfortunately victimized by a trick devised by America’s Got Talent producers. Jourdan Blue revealed that the producers had offered him the chance to use his dress rehearsal recording during the live show, but it wasn’t secured until the last minute before his performance that he would be allowed to sing with all his heart despite suffering from food poisoning. Blue elaborated on his decision to persevere:

They mentioned to me that they might have simply used a recording of me singing, and I responded, ‘That’s not something that sounds like me.’

The statement “That’s just not me” is an excellent reason to take a chance, regardless of potential consequences, as it later proved! The decision was ultimately left to the voters to decide whether his live performance on America’s Got Talent would be a career-ending blunder or an intriguing chapter in a larger success story that could lead him to the semifinals and beyond. Following the positive news that he had advanced, host Terry Crews asked about his feelings after facing so many obstacles, and the singer replied:

I’m feeling incredibly grateful for the dramatic change in my feelings from yesterday to today.)

The gamble proved successful! Often, I don’t advocate for singers to win AGT titles given the presence of The Voice and American Idol as well-known singing competitions. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Jourdan Blue manages to reach the finals. Regardless, I’m relieved he made it to the quarterfinals’ first night, ensuring he has ample time to recover before his next performance. As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, new live episodes of America’s Got Talent grace our screens! The excitement continues on Wednesdays at the same time with live results episodes. In the recent quarterfinals, Jourdan Blue, LightWire, Sirca Marea, and Steve Ray Ladson (who received Sofia Vergara’s coveted golden buzzer) have secured their spots for the next round! Can’t wait to see who else will shine on this stage!
