Lucasfilm has decided to shift its focus for Star Wars films and TV content, moving away from the rapid expansion on Disney+. Instead, they are aiming to prioritize cinema releases and adopt a more quality-focused approach, rather than quantity. This change signals a notable adjustment in Disney’s strategy as Lucasfilm reassesses their direction in the era of streaming services.
Following nearly a decade of focusing primarily on television productions, Lucasfilm is now aiming to focus more on releasing movies in theaters. Since the release of “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019, the Star Wars franchise has been mostly available on Disney+, featuring various live-action and animated series such as “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” “The Bad Batch,” and “Ahsoka.
The approach emerged as a response to both urgency and possibility, serving as a means to sustain the brand and enhance Disney Plus, a new streaming platform that was in need of unique, high-quality content. However, around mid-decade of the 2020s, Lucasfilm has decided to alter its trajectory.
Star Wars’ future is being redefined to center around cinema experiences once more. The studio’s upcoming film, titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu“, is slated for release on May 22, 2026, signaling the franchise’s highly anticipated comeback to movie theaters.
Immediately after it comes “Star Wars: Starfighter,” a new original tale directed by Shawn Levy with Ryan Gosling and the newly cast villain Matt Smith, set for release on May 28, 2027. These two movies are not standalone productions; they mark the beginning of an expanding film series.
This trend is additionally supported by the current state (or lack thereof) on Disney+’s end. A schedule that was previously filled with anticipated streaming series has now noticeably cleared out.
After the third season of “Star Wars: Visions” and a complete series dedicated to “The Ninth Jedi”, it appears Lucasfilm is planning to reduce its streaming output. As of now, only two animated series are confirmed for release in 2026 – “Maul: Shadow Lord”, which follows Darth Maul’s story after Order 66, and the second season of “Ahsoka”. However, that seems to be all that’s currently on the schedule.
In comparison to the pace set between 2022 and 2024, where approximately two to three series were released each year, it’s quite noticeable that things have slowed down.
The official course change in the storyline isn’t merely concerned with pace, it’s more about shifting the focus of the narrative. Recent news indicates that Lucasfilm may be planning to create an entirely fresh, interconnected series of films, possibly starting with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s film centering on Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, and culminating in a grand finale movie marking a significant cinematic event.
This vision extends over a considerable period and shares similarities with the MandoVerse crossover style on Disney+, except that the story will mainly unfold in cinemas. Though the Rey movie seems to be temporarily halted, it’s speculated that it could serve as a starting point for a broader narrative trajectory.
The concept of staging Star Wars movies in theaters resembles something that Disney’s Marvel Studios has been doing. This isn’t a novel approach for Lucasfilm either, as Dave Filoni’s upcoming Star Wars film is intended to wrap up the MandoVerse storylines from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett.
Filoni’s upcoming film is expected to take a considerable amount of time for development, given its position within an extensive storyline, which has led some fans to question whether it will eventually come to fruition.
Currently, several projects that were initially planned at Lucasfilm are experiencing changes. Notably, high-profile filmmakers like Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi have projects in limbo within the Star Wars universe. However, it’s important to note that Rian Johnson is still expressing interest in returning. It seems that Lucasfilm is prioritizing a limited number of significant theatrical releases overseeing a wide range of unconnected ideas, which may include these projects. In other words, while these projects could still materialize, Lucasfilm appears to be concentrating more on its high-priority releases.
I find myself appreciating the current state of things partly due to the fact that the media landscape has evolved significantly since The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ with such a grand entrance. The growth rate of streaming platforms seems to have plateaued, while traditional cinema visits have once again become profitable for studios. Additionally, fans like me have grown more discerning when it comes to deciding which Star Wars tales are worth investing our time in, perhaps as a result of the less-than-favorable reception towards the Acolyte series.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, it’s clear Lucasfilm is heeding our call for grandeur. They’re streamlining their releases and refocusing their creative forces on the big screen to recapture the awe-inspiring experience and cultural significance that once defined Star Wars films. You might recall, the 2015 theater return of Star Wars with The Force Awakens raked in an astounding $936.7 million domestically – a record yet unbeaten!
It seems that the continuous stream of Disney+ content may have come to an end, making way for a more selective, cinematic-focused era in Star Wars. This shift could mean fewer releases, but potentially more significant impacts. However, the streaming service itself will not be completely phased out.
The highly anticipated Disney+ series, “Ahsoka” Season 2, has just offered a sneak peek of Eman Esfandi portraying Ezra Bridger in real life again, a preview that has ignited discussions among fans about the potential plotlines for the new season.
It’s still uncertain whether this fresh approach will prove successful, but the intention is evident: Lucasfilm aims to reinvigorate the sense of grandeur in Star Wars by returning to cinemas.
