Prior to the debut of the “And Just Like That” revival of “Sex and the City”, there was a sense of apprehension among fans as they contemplated how the absence of Kim Cattrall might affect the dynamic of the main female friendship group in the show.
For over twenty years since “Sex and the City” debuted in 1998, the narrative primarily revolved around Carrie Bradshaw, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, as she navigated the quest for love in New York alongside her companions Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha Jones. Spanning six seasons on HBO and two films, Cattrall openly expressed her disinterest in reprising her role within the franchise.
After the debut of the “Sex and the City” revival in December 2021, showrunner Michael Patrick King highlighted that there were no definite intentions to incorporate Cattrall into the original series’ comeback.
Originally, ‘And Just Like That’ wasn’t planned to feature Kim Cattrall as Samantha, as she chose not to play the character many years ago. We have great affection for Kim. I hold a fondness for her and her portrayal of Samantha, and I understood that our audience, including myself, had spent numerous years developing those four friendships. Therefore, I didn’t want to fake her absence, or pretend she was there when she wasn’t. Instead, I chose to represent the truth by showing that one character was missing. From a narrative perspective, I came up with the idea that Samantha resides in London because we didn’t want to kill off such an iconic character.
King stated: “Even when friendships end due to trivial matters escalating, life continues. When a friendship ends, you recall the positive moments and occasionally reach out, but there’s no plan for an immediate reunion. The significance lies in the friendship between those four women, as shown in [Big’s] funeral scene where it resonates strongly.

All the Times the ‘SATC’ Revival ‘And Just Like That’ Has Mentioned Samantha Jones So Far
Prior to the release of the “Sex and the City” revival titled “And Just Like That“, fans were curious about the implications of Kim Cattrall’s absence on the core group of friends. Since the original show debuted in 1998, it followed Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her search for love in New York alongside Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha Jones (Cattrall). After six seasons on HBO and two movies, Cattrall made it clear she had no intention of rejoining the franchise.
Following the premiere of the “Sex and the City” revival in December 2021, showrunner Michael Patrick King clarified that the plan for a “Sex and the City” reboot never intended to include Cattrall. According to King, “And Just Like That” was not meant to bring back Samantha Jones because Cattrall had decided against playing the character many years ago. He expressed his affection towards Kim and her portrayal of Samantha, acknowledging that the audience also shared this sentiment.
King explained that he wanted to represent the reality of Cattrall’s absence in the show rather than trying to hide it. The narrative device chosen was to have Samantha living in London instead of killing off the character, as they loved Samantha and found it illogical to do so.
He further added that friendships can sometimes end due to minor issues escalating into bigger problems, but the good memories remain, and there may still be occasional contact. The series focuses on the friendship between these four women, with a poignant depiction of their bond in a scene at Big’s funeral.
Here are some instances throughout the “And Just Like That” series where Samantha Jones is mentioned:

The Reason for the Fallout
In the first episode of the series comeback, Carrie elaborated on why Samantha parted ways with their circle of friends.
In the December 2021 episode, Parker’s character expressed, ‘I guess there isn’t much to add.’ He explained his decision to let go of her as a publicist due to the current state of the book business. She replied, ‘Alright,’ and ended their friendship. I know she was angry, but I thought our bond was stronger than just financial transactions. I believed we four would be friends for life.

Offering Some Comfort
As a lifestyle expert, I can share that following the unfortunate passing of Chris Noth, fondly known as Mr. Big in the beloved series, I observed an outpouring of sympathy from fans. In this case, one such fan showed their support by sending a beautiful arrangement of flowers to Carrie. Despite Carrie’s preference for no floral arrangements during the funeral service, she graciously allowed Samantha’s bouquet to remain and later texted her heartfelt thanks.

A Nostalgic Conversation
In a broadcast airing in December 2021, the topic centered around Carrie’s recuperation from a hip operation that led to her divulging too much information on her podcast.
Speaking as a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: “My friends, they’re an essential part of my life. They stand by me through thick and thin, as Carrie so eloquently put it during the fifth episode while under pain medication. In fact, I recall a time when my friend Samantha Jones had to literally extract my stuck diaphragm with her bare hand – that’s the kind of unwavering support they provide.
Following Charlotte’s prompt for Samantha to caution Samantha about the straightforward remark, Samantha replied, “One of my best moments.” Later, Carrie expressed her longing for Samantha, a message that almost received a response from her friend, but ultimately went unanswered.

Friendly Advice
In the final episode of February 2022, Carrie grapples with her feelings following her second date with Peter (Jon Tenney), where they shared their first kiss since the passing of Big. Confused about her emotions, Carrie contacts Samantha via text message for advice.
She penned down, “I kissed a guy,” and Samantha responded, “That’s just the start. How was it for you?” Upon learning it didn’t compare to Big, her friend playfully quips, “Guess it was tiny.
Carrie inquired whether Samantha was ready to discuss their recent disagreement, and Samantha assured her that they would do so shortly.

Onscreen Return
In the final episode of Season 2, broadcasted in August 2023, Samantha made an appearance on screen by calling Carrie to inform her she couldn’t come to New York. While Carrie was preparing to say goodbye to her famous apartment, they had a phone conversation to keep in touch.

Texting Advice
In the June 2025 episode, after Carrie encountered their new downstairs neighbor, Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake), she reached out to Samantha through a text message to inquire if she had heard anything about his reputation from her days in London.
“They say he’s a lot of fun. Why?” Samantha immediately replied.
Carrie explained that “he’s living under me,” and Samantha wrote back, “I wish he was under me.”
While at Carrie’s apartment in Gramercy Park, Miranda observed that the reaction was distinctively Samantha-like.
