After several months since the release of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach“, its director Hideo Kojima has unveiled that a concept for a third installment in the series is already in place. In an interview with PlayStation Arabia, Kojima expressed his intention for someone else to develop “Death Stranding 3” instead of taking on the task himself.
According to posts shared by Genki_JPN on social media, Kojima views the conclusion of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” as a fitting end to his work on the Death Stranding franchise. Yet, he has jotted down ideas for a third game in the series, potentially entrusting someone else to bring it to life.
He shared that he’s not currently working on creating ‘DS3’. This is because the conclusions of ‘Death Stranding 2’ serve as a fitting end to both parts 1 and 2 for him. However, he has already developed the idea for ‘DS3’. He hopes that someday someone will bring his vision to life using the concept he’s stored.
It seems that the choice for Kojima’s next project might lean towards working on two other significant games, as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach has been completed. These include Physint, which is planned to be a stealth game and originated from Kojima due to fans asking him to create something similar to a Metal Gear title since his departure from Konami, and OD, another unspecified project.
Indeed, I’ve been brimming with fresh concepts I wished to bring to life while working on Physint in May. However, during the pandemic when I fell ill, I noticed a strong demand from many for something akin to Metal Gear. This sparked an idea for a new espionage game. Upon reflection, I believed this concept had merit.
By February 2024, Kojima had revealed his plan to revisit the espionage genre following his work on Death Stranding since leaving Konami. In a recent interview, Kojima shared that initially, he aimed to develop a fresh concept as a personal challenge, which resulted in the creation of the original Death Stranding. However, after completing Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, he has expressed a desire to delve into some innovative concepts he’s recently been contemplating.
Since that time, numerous fresh concepts have emerged. Over the past eight years, I’ve noticed a consistent trend on social media platforms where users worldwide express their desire for a new ‘Metal Gear’ and similar requests.
Although Hideo Kojima’s project titled Physint remains in the distant future as it’s currently in the “conceptual stage”, Kojima has also been teaming up with Microsoft on a horror game named OD. Despite previous mentions that Physint may not be released for another 5-6 years, there have been recent concerns about the progress of OD following Microsoft’s latest round of layoffs. However, both Kojima Productions and Xbox have confirmed that work on OD continues as they collaborate on this project together, with the collaboration still active.
Back in the year 2022, it was announced that the film titled OD would feature Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier as its main stars.
Hideo Kojima has penned a concept for Death Stranding 3, but he’s not planning to create it himself, as he considers the ending of Death Stranding 2 as his conclusion for both games.
