The new DC Universe has made an excellent debut, largely due to Superman’s strong opening performance at the cinema. While the DC Extended Universe faced several setbacks towards the end of its tenure, it’s worth noting that no film from that universe has surpassed Superman’s domestic box office earnings so far. To date, Superman has earned $346.9 million in North America, adding up to a total of $604.47 million worldwide when combined with its international earnings of $257.5 million. However, it’s only Man of Steel from the DC Extended Universe that has outperformed Superman domestically as of now.
The initial “Wonder Woman” film, launched in 2017, was a blockbuster success for Warner Bros. and DC, garnering acclaim from both audiences and critics while surpassing box office projections. Unlike other movies, such as “Superman” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it generated more revenue domestically than internationally, with $412.5 million in the U.S. and $410.4 million overseas, resulting in a global earnings totaling $822.96 million. Although other films like “Superman” and “Aquaman” performed better internationally, they didn’t match the domestic performance of “Wonder Woman.” Despite Superman’s underwhelming international sales, it continues to thrive domestically, hinting at a potential $400 million final total.
How High Will Superman‘s Box Office Soar?
It’s clear that nothing is certain in the movie industry, and with strong performances from films like New Line’s horror movie “Weapons” and Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” it appears that Superman’s box office success may be on a downward trend. Weekend estimates show that Superman earned $3.43 million in its seventh week, placing it in seventh position. Although there isn’t significant competition for Superman this week, it seems unlikely the film will stay in the top ten for long, especially since another superhero movie, Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four: The First Steps,” is still among the top four performers at the box office and has been running for five weeks.
Considering the context, it remains uncertain where the cinematic run of Superman will conclude. Generally, films stay in theaters for approximately three months, contingent on their success. Consequently, the film has essentially reached its halfway point. Given that its earnings are now in the single digits, there’s a chance Superman might not garner enough momentum to surpass Wonder Woman’s impressive domestic box office collection. This is particularly likely since the movie has already outperformed most recent superhero films. Adaptations of comic books have not been the guaranteed box office sensations they were in 2017. It’s rare for them to gross over $600 million worldwide, let alone $800 million, so Superman is already considered a success as it stands.
In the movie “Superman,” helmed by James Gunn, we see David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult take on leading roles. Additionally, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Skyler Gisondo, Frank Grillo, María Gabriela de Faría, and Wendell Pierce are part of the cast. On the other hand, in the 2017 film “Wonder Woman,” directed by Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot plays the title character, with Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Lucy Davis rounding out the cast.
Superman is now playing exclusively in movie theaters everywhere.
