We’ll begin with “The Voice Said Kill” on page 13, where a pivotal dialogue takes place between two mothers who are willing to go to great extremes for their kids. At the moment, their dislike for each other isn’t boiling over, but tensions will escalate later on.

In the first issue, there’s an intriguing conversation between these two characters. The smoke on the page acts as a visual barrier, emphasizing their separation. As the story progresses, we’re seeing more of what unites our main characters – their shared responsibilities as mothers. Despite their contrasting personalities, they are bound by an intense, primal need to safeguard their children. Although they harbor mutual disdain, they discover a dangerous alliance in this raw, maternal tenacity, as Spurrier described it.

In certain instances, Vanesa’s artwork takes on an impressionistic, dream-like quality. It fragments into intricate lines that suggest emotions and figures, rather than meticulously reproducing every detail in a laborious realistic style. However, as the narrative turns dark just a few pages later, you can be sure that the level of detail increases dramatically, making the space feel oppressively confined very quickly, according to Spurrier’s explanation.

Moving forward, let’s examine page 28. This page transports you smoothly into the cityscape, giving the impression that you’re gazing at the skyline from a window next door. The level of immersion is noteworthy, and even though it’s silent, it speaks volumes for those who are attentive.

Here’s a quiet page, heavy with stillness and humidity. The air seems sticky, and you can hear crickets chirping in the tall grass. This small town, battered by Katrina and showing its age, is a testament to the harsh reality of nature. Our tale often explores the misguided belief among white Americans that they can control the wild – a notion that’s clearly false when you spend time here. Despite attempts at self-deception and leaving one’s mark on the edge of the wilderness, the truth is undeniable: the waters will rise, moss will grow, and storms will come. Time passes quickly in this place: it forgets us. Our protagonist Marie seems to grasp this reality better than anyone else. When we abruptly switch to her scene, retching violently, the only thing that feels alive, vibrant, and raw in this tired old town, we know: something significant is about to happen,” Spurrier remarked.

In addition, we’ve got a fresh take on Cover B for “The Voice Said Kill” #4, skillfully designed by the gifted Emma Price. Here’s another treat: Attached is the unseen variant cover for issue #4 – it’s by our very own series designer, the versatile Emma Price. Vanesa Del Rey expressed, “My story is influenced by personal experiences with psychedelic substances. The imagery I encountered during my sessions, such as the suspended trees, moss, and patterns on leaves and flowers, resembles fractals I’ve seen while using psychedelics. The setting in an estuary ecosystem adds to this ‘in-between’ feeling, as psychedelics transport you to a state outside of yourself, much like pregnancy does.
