Japanese streaming platform Disney+ has unveiled a fresh trailer and poster for the eagerly awaited anime adaption of “Cat’s Eye.” Originating from Shonen Jump in 1981, this new show marks the first full-length animated adaptation since 1985. The new “Cat’s Eye” anime series is set to debut on September 26th, as indicated by the trailer, poster, and newly launched website. The latest poster showscased the three primary heroines in a striking pose above Tokyo, with Tosio depicted in the corner running. The trailer emphasized the thrilling action synonymous with the series, such as the female leads evading law enforcement.
Today, a Japanese website went live for the upcoming anime series “Cat’s Eye.” This site showcases promotional images, story summaries, production team details, trailers, and character profiles. Liden Films is responsible for producing and animating this new adaptation of “Cat’s Eye,” a studio renowned for its work on the 2016 version of “Berserk,” which combined 3D models with traditional 2D animation. The animation style in “Cat’s Eye” retains similar elements, but it has been refined and made cleaner. Additionally, Liden Films has worked on popular series such as “Tokyo Revengers,” “Goblin Slayer,” the remake of “Rurouni Kenshin,” and this latest project will be available exclusively on Disney+.
Everything to Know About Disney+’s Shonen Jump Revival
It’s important to note that Disney+’s “Cat’s Eye” isn’t the same as the French adaptation of the manga available on Amazon Prime. The French “Cat’s Eye” series, a drama show, debuted internationally on Amazon Prime in November 2024 and comprises eight episodes. It was renewed for another season. Prior to this adaptation, there were actually two different anime series titled “Cat’s Eye,” which were released in the 80s. The original anime ran from 1983 to 1984, followed by a sequel, “Cat’s Eye 2,” that aired from 1984 to 1985. The franchise has seen various adaptations over the years, including a Japanese live-action film in 1997 and a crossover movie with “Lupin the III” called “Lupin the 3rd vs. Cat’s Eye,” which streamed on Amazon Prime in 2023.
In simpler terms, the “Cat’s Eye” manga, popularly known for its creator Tsukasa Hojo who is famous for “City Hunter” and “Angel Heart”, introduces a group of three sisters running a cafe in Tokyo by day and stealing priceless art, believed to have once belonged to their missing father, by night. The middle sister, Hitomi Kisugi, leads the story, leaving a calling card with a cat’s eye symbol for the police to trace. A policeman pursues the Cat’s Eye thieves as a love interest for Hitomi, unaware of the connection between the sisters and the art thieves. The manga stood out due to its female-centric protagonists in an adventure series, which was relatively unusual at that time, considering that Shonen Jump’s audience typically followed stories featuring predominantly male heroes.
In the upcoming series titled “Hitomi”, the characters Hitomi, Rui, and Ai will be brought to life by voice artists Mikako Komatsu, Ami Koshimizu, and Yumiri Hanamori respectively. The role of Toshio Utsumi, Hitomi’s love interest and future husband, will be played by Takuya Sato. This series is appreciated for its playful and cheerful atmosphere. Additionally, it was recently announced on the revamped “Cat’s Eye” show website that Yoko Hikasa and Katsuyuki Konishi will join the cast as Mitsuko Asaya and Masato Kamiya respectively.
