In the 1980s, a popular TV show is being remade into a big-screen production, and the project is under talented minds. The movie’s creation is led by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, who are currently discussing scriptwriting for the reboot. Moreover, there are talks for Hurwitz and Schlossberg to direct the film as well. This creative team will oversee the remake through their production company, Counterbalance Entertainment.
On Tuesday, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the classic series Knight Rider is set for a movie reboot. At this point in time, information about the reboot is being tightly guarded, but it appears that the project is currently in its initial stages. In addition, Kelly McCormick and David Leitch are on board as producers for the venture, working through their production company 87North. This company holds a first-look agreement with Universal Pictures.
The Cobra Kai Team Takes On Knight Rider
The television show “Knight Rider” featured David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a law enforcement officer who joins the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Michael’s partner is KITT, an artificially intelligent car housed within a seemingly indestructible 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Together, they combat crime.
The classic TV show “Knight Rider” initially aired on NBC from 1982 to 1986. In 1994, a movie titled “Knight Rider 2010,” which was somewhat inspired by the successful series, came out. Unfortunately, this film was met with unfavorable reviews both from critics and fans, earning only a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes. For quite some time now, there’s been talk about remaking “Knight Rider” with a screenplay previously written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider.
As one of their collaborators, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg on the revival series Cobra Kai, a continuation of the iconic Karate Kid franchise from the ’80s. This series spanned an impressive six seasons, initially airing on YouTube before finding its home on Netflix. Our collective efforts played a significant role in reigniting interest in this classic franchise, culminating in the highly-anticipated movie release, Karate Kid Legends.
Before creating the popular Netflix series “Cobra Kai”, Hurwitz and Schlossberg had previously directed the “Harold & Kumar” films. They later wrote and directed the Universal film, “American Reunion”, which was a sequel to “American Pie”. Following their work on “Cobra Kai”, the pair started looking for their next project. This includes a remake of “Night Rider” as well as a new “Harold & Kumar” movie for Lionsgate. As of now, the release date for the “Knight Rider” reboot has not been set.
In addition to their work on shows like “Cobra Kai” and films from the “Harold & Kumar” series, Hurwitz and Schlossberg have also produced projects such as “Blockers”, “Plan B”, and the TV show “Obliterated”. At one point, they were associated with a potential spinoff of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” for Paramount. If this project had been realized, it would have narrated the story of the two valets and their adventure with the iconic Ferrari, which unfortunately has not yet materialized.
