In 2025, the film “Superman” became one of the most financially successful movies, earning more than $600 million globally at the box office. Notably, this is a larger success than what’s typically achieved by live-action adaptations of DC Comics films. For example, “Superman Returns,” “Black Adam,” and both “The Flash” in 2023 and “The Suicide Squad” in 2021 failed to surpass the $400+ million mark globally during their theatrical runs. While “Wonder Woman” and “Aquaman” have been global box office titans, many other DC films have faced challenges in attracting massive global audiences and achieving substantial financial success.
To demonstrate the immense success of Superman, consider how significantly it surpasses the average Batman movies. Globally, Superman has earned more than six individual installments from the Batman series. Despite films such as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “The Batman,” and both “Dark Knight” sequels continuing to outperform Zack Snyder’s Superman, this 2025 superhero film has achieved an unprecedented level of popularity, even surpassing numerous entries in one of the most successful comic book movie franchises ever created.
6) Batman & Robin
It’s highly unlikely that any standalone Batman movie will ever flop as badly financially on a global scale as Batman & Robin did, given it made only $107.3 million in the US and $238.31 million worldwide. This is starkly different from Superman, which surpassed Batman & Robin’s total worldwide earnings within its first week of release, indicating just how poorly the last 20th-century Batman film fared. Unfortunately, even George Clooney wasn’t able to prevent this project from facing significant financial trouble.
5) Batman Returns
Despite its current acclaimed status, it’s somewhat surprising to reflect that Tim Burton’s movie “Batman Returns” earned just $266.97 million worldwide. Domestically, the film’s darker style didn’t resonate well, and international audiences weren’t as drawn to it as they were with the initial “Batman.” As a result, its global earnings were significantly lower than what Gunn’s “Superman” accumulated during its run. However, in the long term, “Batman Returns” can be considered culturally successful. Initially, though, its worldwide box office performance fell short of expectations.
4) The LEGO Batman Movie
Globally, the LEGO brand isn’t as recognized as it is in North America. Consequently, the 2014 film “The LEGO Movie” was significantly more successful domestically compared to overseas markets. This pattern continued with the film’s sequels, like “The LEGO Batman Movie,” which earned a total of $312.15 million globally but a slightly higher amount, $175.75 million, within North America. Despite this impressive global earnings, it indicates that “LEGO Batman” only surpassed about half of the worldwide income generated by “Superman.”
3) Batman Forever
Following the contentious release of “Batman Returns”, Warner Bros. officials sought a more commercially viable direction for the Batman film series. They achieved this with the vibrant, youth-oriented “Batman Forever”. Their strategy proved successful as “Batman Forever” was the top domestic live-action movie of 1995 and the fifth highest-grossing film worldwide that year, earning $336.68 million globally. However, this impressive figure from 1995 couldn’t compare to Superman’s massive worldwide gross of over $605 million.
2) Batman Begins
Contrary to what one might expect, the Christopher Nolan phase of Batman movies didn’t start off with a massive financial explosion at the box office. Batman Begins, despite earning a substantial $205.34 million domestically, didn’t come close to the global earnings achieved by films like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man series. Although it wasn’t as financially successful as 1989’s Batman or the future Superman, Batman Begins received overwhelmingly positive reactions from audiences that Nolan would capitalize on in his subsequent sequels. These later movies would rake in global box office revenues far surpassing what Batman Begins made, to phrase it mildly.
1) Batman
Tim Burton’s first Batman film from 1989, starring Michael Keaton, remains one of the influential summer blockbusters shaping American culture today. Unlike the 1966 Batman movie, which was an adaptation of the popular Adam West TV series, this film presented a live-action, big-budget depiction of its title character. The anticipation leading up to its release was immense, resulting in a massive $412.81 million worldwide gross and $252.65 million from North American theaters alone. Even without adjusting for inflation, modern DC movies like Black Adam and The Flash haven’t approached Batman’s global box office earnings. Although Superman outperformed Batman globally, most other DC films have yet to match the success of this groundbreaking film in terms of box office revenue.
Batman is now streaming on HBO Max, Superman is now playing in theaters.
