These days, it’s not common to find references to the early phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back then, “Iron Man” was released 17 years ago, and many of the original Avengers, who were instrumental in those earlier days, are no longer active. Instead, attention has shifted towards characters such as Spider-Man, who continues to contribute to the franchise, and reboots of former Fox properties like the Fantastic Four and X-Men. However, Marvel Studios has recently shown appreciation for the “black sheep” of the MCU, The Incredible Hulk, by bringing back a couple of characters who haven’t been seen on screen since 2008.
Brave New World” features Captain America battling a villain named Samuel Sterns, who was created by Bruce Banner (also known as The Hulk). Other significant characters from “The Incredible Hulk” are present, but they don’t have significant roles. Ultimately, it seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) revived characters from one of its early productions who may not have been the most fitting for this particular storyline.
The Incredible Hulk Characters in Brave New World Don’t Have a Future in the MCU
In a reimagined setting of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World,” Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, famously known as the Hulk pursuer, ascends to the presidency. His primary agenda is to elevate the United States to global dominance, which involves exploiting adamantium from the Celestial in the Indian Ocean and reactivating the Avengers. Sam Wilson encounters the president, listens to his proposal of reuniting the team, but discussions are cut short due to an unexpected assassination attempt. It’s later discovered that Sterns, long incarcerated, has been causing trouble for the president by leveraging his intellectual prowess to help Ross solve complex problems.
In his single-minded pursuit of revenge, Sterns transforms Thaddeus into the Hulk and releases him into the world during a particularly chaotic time. Captain America puts forth every effort to halt the enraged beast, but it’s only by mentioning Betty Ross, Thaddeus’ long-estranged daughter, that he manages to restore some reason. As a result, both Sterns and Thaddeus find themselves in custody at the Raft, where they may remain for an extended period. Finding suitable roles for them moving forward proves challenging, especially given Harrison Ford’s apparent disinterest in reprising his role and the Leader failing to measure up as a formidable villain. Unfortunately, it seems that _Brave New World_ marks the end of the line for most characters from _The Incredible Hulk_, with the exception of Bruce Banner. This is unfortunate because there’s at least one more character brimming with potential.
Doc Samson Doesn’t Get the Chance to Shine in The Incredible Hulk
Following the incident that spawned his green alter ego, Banner spends years eluding Thaddeus and his team. Eventually, he returns to America, where he unexpectedly reunites with his ex-lover, Betty, who is now involved with psychiatrist Leonard Samson. Samson is less than thrilled about Bruce’s return and concerns himself with Betty’s safety. As the fighting ensues, however, Samson steps aside while Betty accompanies Banner to meet Sterns. In his subsequent reappearance, Banner has a noticeably changed appearance and fails to mention his recent adventures with Betty or her boyfriend, Samson. Regardless, it’s unfair for Doc Samson to be overlooked given his significant role in the comic books as an intriguing character.
In the Marvel Comics universe, similar to how it’s portrayed in the MCU, Samson faces off against the Hulk. After working as Banner’s psychologist, Samson undergoes gamma radiation exposure, granting him super strength and durability. This transformation sets the stage for Samson to engage in conflicts with the Hulk and collaborate with other heroes. Like many comic book characters, he occasionally dies or turns evil, but he generally stands as a courageous figure striving to improve the world. With the MCU undergoing change, it would have been beneficial to reintroduce Ty Burrell, potentially expanding his character’s impact in the franchise. Regrettably, it seems that Dr. Samson will be nothing more than a minor reference in the storyline of the world’s most prominent franchise.
