Anticipating long-awaited games can often feel overwhelming due to the passage of years, as expectations may drastically change based on marketing efforts, early reviews, or the game’s own evolution throughout development.
Lost Soul Aside has journeyed through a challenging path to reach its current state. Initially developed by a single individual, the game’s ambition grew significantly when PlayStation became involved through their China Hero Project, a program designed to help promising Chinese development studios flourish.
Despite the polished appearance that suggests a AAA game, Lost Soul Aside still carries traces of its indie roots. There’s an undeniable enthusiasm evident in the game’s action, which draws heavily from series like Devil May Cry and PlatinumGames, paying homage to the character action genre in a genuine way.
As an avid fan, I must admit that the heart of Lost Soul Aside’s combat is fast-paced and thrilling, often reminiscent of a whirlwind. However, it seems the game developers have chosen to encase this core with elements common in today’s gaming world, which at times feels like a blend of traditional and questionable design choices.
In an effort to elevate Lost Soul Aside beyond a simple action game, we find ourselves immersed in a story that, while intriguing, lacks originality. Interspersed among the action are walk-and-talk sequences with characters that may seem one-dimensional at times. To add depth, there’s a skill tree to customize our character, crafting ingredients to gather, and loot that subtly enhances our stats.
While these elements contribute to the overall gameplay, they do lend a sense of familiarity to an otherwise unique combat system.
Surprisingly, the latest version seems surprisingly streamlined instead of overloaded. Most notably, the additional features seem to have been added merely to meet the requirements of a $70 PS5 title, rather than being organically integrated into the game, as they initially were in 2014 when it was just one person’s endeavor.
It’s unclear if Yang Bing finalized the story for Lost Soul Aside long ago, but what is certain is that the story is undeniably the weakest aspect of the completed game. Disregarding the questionable English voice acting, we have a familiar narrative featuring an oppressive empire, a group of rebels, and an ancient enemy who has inexplicably reemerged after a thousand years to threaten humanity’s survival.
In this game, world development is predominantly found within character profiles hidden in the menus rather than being overtly presented. As previously stated, the characters are not particularly complex or deeply developed. Fortunately, the game doesn’t rely heavily on dialogue, but it does expect that you have some interest in interacting with the characters occasionally to learn more about them and progress through the game.
As a gamer, I find myself immersed in a world where the main character, Kaser, seems to lack personality, and his constant companion, a dragon spirit, is chattier than a parrot on caffeine. The characters that follow our lead are as predictable as a soap opera, and it feels like I’ve stepped into a time machine set to ‘tropes of yesteryear.’ To make matters worse, the authors throw around capitalized fantasy and sci-fi names left and right without bothering to provide context or explanation.
To put it simply, Devil May Cry isn’t played primarily for its storyline, and this principle applies to Lost Soul Aside as well. However, you should note that the narrative in Lost Soul Aside is more extensive than in the original Devil May Cry series. What you really crave from these games, though, is the exhilarating action that’s been hyped since their inception, and fortunately, it seems that Lost Soul Aside delivers on this promise for the most part. It’s a lot of fun!
The success relies on impressive combos, unique special moves, and two crucial defensive strategies: evading and shielding. Initially, the extent of the game’s action may seem vague during the early stages; however, as you conquer several bosses and acquire new weapons, it becomes apparent that a substantial amount of time and dedication has been invested in offering players an extensive degree of freedom.
In simpler terms, feel free to show off your skills against common enemies by unleashing impressive combos. However, it’s important to stay vigilant since you can still get overwhelmed and locked in attacks that could lead to defeat. But when it comes to boss fights, the action gets more intense.
In progress is our review of Lost Soul Aside, and although we haven’t finished it yet, the diverse array of adversaries we’ve encountered so far has already left us quite impressed.
Although the combat may seem less thrilling when facing formidable enemies, who can only be staggered or combo’d after their armor is reduced, the grandeur of each battle often compensates for its slower pace.
In these battles, your dodges and blocks should be sharp and precise. There’s a formidable foe that appears around the third hour or so, serving as a guardian for the remainder of the journey. This character presents a significant jump in difficulty – a dramatic challenge that may invite criticism. However, once you overcome it, you gain a clear understanding of what Lost Soul Aside is truly about.
attacks with blue visual effects can be countered. It’s likely that you’ll find yourself dying and having to restart against numerous bosses until you understand the signals and patterns of their moves.
Lost Soul Aside is significantly challenging, without easy difficulty settings. Its level of difficulty might be compared to that of the Chinese game Black Myth: Wukong. While there are multiple potent defensive strategies available, mastering their application is key, as the challenge primarily stems from this.
Instead of finding the action entertaining overall, we feel that in certain areas, it could benefit from more depth or impact. To be specific, Kaser’s fighting technique is intended to appear agile, smooth, and elegant, but sometimes the animations seem too light, or there’s a missing sound effect, which makes some attacks seem less impactful, and this can diminish the enjoyment of battles during actual gameplay.
It seems that this game appears to retrace its independent origins. There’s a noticeable absence of refinement – or at least the kind you’d expect from a $70 game – in Lost Soul Aside. The character models lack emotion, appearing more like lifeless mannequins, the settings feel provisional, and the technical aspects aren’t up to par.
As a passionate player, I’d like to delve deeper into my recent experience with this game. While it performs remarkably well during combat scenes, maintaining a seamless frame rate, there are bizarre stutters that occur during traversal, even on the PS5 Pro console. Regrettably, the audio quality is less than ideal; the music frequently fades in and out as I transition between in-game cutscenes and brief loading screens, and certain sound effects feel truncated or prematurely ended.
Indeed, we’re currently enjoying Lost Soul Aside, and the day one update has been installed thoroughly. Although it’s a significant improvement, there are still some tweaks needed, without a doubt.
