Adult Swim Ends Cartoon Network Classics Block After Two Years

After almost two years, Adult Swim has concluded its block of classic Cartoon Network shows known as Checkered Past. This decision comes as Adult Swim and Cartoon Network undergo significant changes, with the cable channel modifying its schedule and priorities. The Adult Swim brand flourished significantly during the pandemic, leading to an expansion within Cartoon Network and a shift that began two hours earlier each day. This development opened up opportunities for innovative experimentation as well.

One entertaining experiment among others was a weekly programming block called “Checkered Past,” which aired on two additional hours that Adult Swim had due to Cartoon Network’s programming schedule. This block brought back some of Adult Swim’s older shows that hadn’t been on the network for years, including classics like “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.” Unfortunately, it seems that this nostalgic trip down memory lane with “Checkered Past” has ended according to Adult Swim’s future listings.

What Happened to Checkered Past?

Starting from Monday, June 30th, as per Adult Swim’s schedule, Checkered Past has concluded its run, ending prematurely on June 27th. Initially airing for two hours every weekday, it has now been reduced and seems to have vanished entirely, making way for more episodes of the popular rerun show, King of the Hill. While it’s strategic for a channel like Adult Swim, given King of the Hill’s status as one of the top syndicated programs, it is disappointing for fans who cherished the return of these beloved Cartoon Network shows after such a long time.

Over the next year, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network are set for several transformations, possibly more given the current circumstances at Warner Bros. Discovery. If they decide to split their TV channels, streaming platforms, and other sectors into distinct divisions, each cable channel will need to adapt by offering content that thrives in this new environment. With television viewing habits evolving, even popular channels like Adult Swim may have to focus on what performs best instead of continuing experimental programming.

What Was Checkered Past?

Initially airing on Adult Swim in August 2023, Checkered Past lasted for almost two years with the network. The original two-hour time slot featured a lineup including Dexter’s Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Due to their impressive performance upon revival, additional classic Cartoon Network shows were later incorporated into the block, with Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, Evil Con Carne, Samurai Jack, and others joining in. For a while, even some classic Toonami shows like Toonami Rewind were included, but that segment was eventually discontinued as well.

In the past, Checkered Past broadcasted some pioneering shows that are quite challenging to watch today, including “Cartoon Planet,” “The Cartoon Cartoon Show,” “Johnny Bravo,” and “What a Cartoon!”. Interestingly, this nostalgic block is set to continue in Latin America, but unfortunately, it has ended its run in the United States. As Adult Swim adjusts its schedule, we’re unsure how long this change will last.
