Doctor Doom’s Avengers Finally Clash With the Real Avengers, and There’s Some Major Deaths

It turned out that Doctor Doom, frustrated by the Avengers‘ refusal to submit to his authority, assembled a team resembling Earth’s Mightiest Heroes but composed of enigmatic characters from the future who took on the aliases of villains. The true nature of these “Superior Avengers” is still unfolding in the Superior Avengers comic series. However, what fans have been eagerly awaiting is the moment when the phony Avengers cross paths with the genuine article. This much-anticipated confrontation is now taking place, but the question remains: who among them will survive? Spoiler alert for Superior Avengers #3.

In issue #3 of the “Superior Avengers,” penned by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Luca Maresca, Mattia Iacono, Kyle Hotz, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC’s Cory Petit, the story unfolds in the chambers of Doctor Doom’s son, Kristoff Vernard. Kristoff has recently been involved in a romantic encounter with Killmonger, the leader of the “Superior Avengers.” Kristoff shares a complex past with Victor Von Doom, whom the “Superior Avengers” believe is responsible for damaging their future. Despite appearing to serve Doom, the “Superior Avengers” are covertly plotting to eliminate him, as they hold him accountable for ruining their world in the future.

Doctor Octopus interrupts Kristoff and Killmonger with the news that Graviton has managed to break free from the Raft. In response, the Superior Avengers set out for Detroit to apprehend Graviton, only to discover that the genuine Avengers were already present on the scene.

The Avengers vs. Superior Avengers: Who Will Win?

Graviton brags about receiving the recognition he’s longed for as it requires two teams of Avengers to vanquish him. Captain Marvel assures this won’t be a situation where heroes engage in conflict while the villain escapes. Killmonger retorts that they will return Graviton to Latveria, but Doom’s prisons have ample space for those who challenge his authority.

In this configuration, the two teams face each other head-on. Scarlet Witch confronts Onslaught, feeling irritated by someone wearing Magneto’s helmet in her presence. Onslaught informs Scarlet Witch that while she may not recognize them, it was her kin who ultimately doomed mutantkind. In response, Scarlet Witch attacks with such ferocity that she splits Onslaught apart.

In this scenario, Captain America (Sam Wilson) encounters Abomination, and the menacing green armor and shield of the antagonist evoke chilling echoes of Hydra Cap from “Secret Empire.” Captain Marvel endeavors to assist Iron Man in subduing Graviton, only to be disrupted by an aggressive Killmonger. The ensuing struggle reveals that Killmonger possesses an Adamantium blade initially destined for the Black Panther. Vision rushes to aid Iron Man, yet his sensors detect an unusual phenomenon with Abomination. When confronted by Ghost, Vision’s eye beams create a large opening in her, although he claims it was not intended to cause fatal harm and the blast wasn’t designed for lethal consequences. Nevertheless, this doesn’t diminish the conspicuous hole left in Ghost.

In an interview with ComicBook, Superior Avengers author Steve Foxe mentioned that when it came to determining the team roster, one character that caught his attention was a fresh female version of Killmonger. He felt this new character had great potential to bring a unique twist to the established team dynamic and perhaps even match up against a well-known princess.

He went on to say, “I aimed to challenge assumptions through some of these character names, and to catch readers off guard with the true nature of ‘Abomination’ or ‘Onslaught.’ I don’t want to reveal too much about any of them, but delving into their distinct personalities has been a major part of the enjoyment in writing this book. This is especially true since Luca nailed all the character designs on his first attempt.

It’s clear that the readers are left guessing about the true motives behind the Superior Avengers’ desire to eliminate Doctor Doom and their apparent alliance with him. It’s possible they’re deceiving us or perhaps Onslaught and Ghost have not been truly vanquished, but could it be a ruse by the Superior Avengers? Only time will tell.
