Recently, Superman has been exceptionally popular. Recognizing the potential impact of the 2025 Superman series, DC Comics has been delivering captivating Superman stories over the past few years. Currently, fans are getting an intriguing glimpse into Superman’s early days as Superboy in Action Comics, and exploring crucial storylines shaping the future of the DC Multiverse in Superman. Furthermore, there have been several exceptional Superman miniseries released in 2025. The latest epic adventure featuring Superman is Adventures of Superman: The Book of El, issue #1, where Phillip Kennedy Johnson, a key figure behind the current success of Superman, returns to pen a chilling tale set in a grim future within the DC universe.
The Book of El #1 continues some stories left unfinished following Johnson’s departure from Superman comics, doing so in the most authentic Superman fashion.
The narrative commences at a leisurely pace initially, delving into everyday life on the Kent farm in Smallville. Characters such as Clark, Lois, Jon, Otho, Osul, and the Kents themselves are depicted engaged in farm activities. Though it may seem unusual for this to be the beginning of a comic book series that culminates in a dystopian future, it effectively sets the stage for contrasting Superman’s current world with his future circumstances.
This technique of juxtaposition enables readers to appreciate Superman’s attachment to his roots amidst the grandeur and peril of his superhero duties. While it may take time for the purpose of this opening sequence to become clear, upon completing the issue, its significance becomes evident. It appears that writer Johns found pleasure in penning some charming Kent family moments on the farm, a setting he had limited opportunity to explore during his previous run, which primarily focused on Warworld and Metropolis.
In essence, this narrative serves as a reminder that despite Superman’s battles against formidable adversaries across the multiverse, he would prefer spending time with his loved ones on their farm if given the choice.
Scott Godlewski’s artwork is stunningly beautiful. Godlewski demonstrates an exceptional style, and the script by Johnson effectively highlights his versatility as an artist. The narrative commences in the Promethean Galaxy, where the book’s principal antagonist ascends on colossal entities drifting through space. Initially, it appears as if we’re merely watching someone climb a mountain, but the scene gradually unfolds into a breathtaking double-page spread that unveils the true scope of the scene. This method skillfully conveys the story’s grandeur to readers, and Godlewski meticulously includes every detail. The opening pages are exceptionally captivating and immediately immerse you in the plot.
In these farm scenes from the comic, Godlewski showcases his exceptional artistic abilities yet again. While the pages themselves may not be filled with intense action, they are beautifully crafted, capturing simple moments such as the twins gardening with Pa, playing with Jon, flashbacks of Clark reminiscing about his childhood with Pa, and the elder Kents relaxing on the porch. Godlewski’s style is near perfect, making everything visually appealing. As the action in the issue unfolds, his artwork continues to impress with vibrant imagery. The layout of the pages, stretching panels across two pages, provides a cinematic experience that we don’t always find. However, for the best viewing experience, I recommend purchasing a physical copy of this book, as the art will look much more stunning on a printed page.
Exploring the Ties in “Adventures of Superman: The Book of El” #1 – A Thoughtful Beginning
In the first issue of “Adventures of Superman: The Book of El”, we find a connection to the “Warworld Saga”, offering an almost sequel-like narrative. This comic caters to both new and seasoned Superman readers, ensuring that newcomers have a solid foundation for understanding the story’s context if they choose to jump on board with this initial release.
While the pacing might be a bit leisurely, it provides Johnson and Godlewski an opportunity to delve into Superman’s humble beginnings on the farm before diving into what appears to be a rather grim tale. Given that DC Comics seldom ventures into dystopian futures, this book promises an intriguing journey as it unfolds throughout its run.
