James Gunn Teases the DCU Krypton Scenes in Supergirl

In a matter of weeks, DC Studios will unveil its most ambitious project yet with the premiere of James Gunn’s reimagined Superman film. This highly anticipated movie offers a fresh perspective on the legendary character and marks the beginning of the new DC Universe (DCU). Although this Superman story won’t delve into his origins, there’s a possibility that we may catch glimpses of his past as the DCU unfolds. More specifically, it seems that we might get to explore Superman’s home planet, Krypton, but those scenes might require a bit of patience before they are revealed.

In an exclusive conversation, we chatted with Gunn about Superman, and he hinted at elements of Krypton that might appear in the forthcoming Supergirl film rather than in Superman.

Gunn mentioned that flashbacks of Krypton in ‘Supergirl’ could occur, but he believes that such scenes are crucial to highlighting the unique characteristics of Clark Kent and Supergirl. Clark, unlike many other superheroes, had a stable upbringing filled with love and tranquility, which makes him less dysfunctional. On the other hand, Supergirl, particularly in the DCU, has had a troubled past, having witnessed countless deaths as her home planet disintegrated.

It’s quite logical for Krypton scenes to appear in Supergirl instead of Superman, given their different backstories. While Superman has no personal memories of his home planet Krypton, as he was sent to Earth as an infant to survive its destruction, his cousin Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) was older at that time. This means that Kara carries the memories of Krypton and its civilization with her. With the upcoming Supergirl movie being based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics, as confirmed by Gunn, and focusing on Kara’s life before Earth, or at least the influence of losing everything she knew, it makes more sense for Krypton scenes to be included in this film rather than in a Superman one.

From a movie enthusiast’s perspective:

In the realm of DC Studios, I eagerly await two upcoming films – “Superman,” directed by Gunn, and “Supergirl.” The former, starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, is set to hit the big screen on July 11. On a slightly distant horizon, “Supergirl” directed by Craig Gillespie, features Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, and it’s slated for a theater release on June 26, 2026.
