The choice regarding the forthcoming season of Doctor Who might not be made for several more months, as producer Jane Tranter disclosed that Disney is not obliged to decide until after the upcoming spin-off has been broadcast.
Ever since the final installment of the last season, concluding with Ncuti Gatwa’s character, The Fifteenth Doctor, undergoing an unexpected transformation into Billie Piper in “The Reality War”, fans have been on edge, eagerly anticipating any updates about whether Disney might greenlight another season.
It might take some time before we hear about additional episodes, as producer Tranter has shared that once the initial 26 episodes, including the spin-off, have been aired on Disney+, only then will Disney+ decide if they wish to produce more.
In her statement to The Royal Television Society, she expressed that given Disney’s own significant budget reductions and program cancellations, they might be carefully considering and assessing their options before making decisions about their future plans.
Despite this, she added that “fundamentally, it’s a BBC program and it will continue, in some form or another.
Although the air date for The War Between the Land and the Sea hasn’t been announced yet, the BBC’s Head of Content, Kate Phillips, has shared plans to broadcast it sometime in the year 2026.

It’s worth mentioning that, although a decision isn’t necessary immediately following the spin-off, it could potentially be made earlier.
Thankfully, as Tranter pointed out, Doctor Who’s future does not depend on Disney’s decision.
At the Edinburgh TV Festival, Phillips recently announced that the show will come back on BBC, regardless of whether Disney is involved or not.

“Any Whovians out there, rest assured – Doctor Who is going nowhere,” she said.
Disney’s partnership with us has been fantastic, and it will continue into next year with ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea.’ Moving ahead, whether Disney is involved or not, Doctor Who will remain on BBC.
