However, Batman’s character as a hero sometimes puts him at cross-purposes with his fellow League members.

Occasionally, Batman and the Justice League have had differences in strategy when dealing with a specific danger, leading Batman to temporarily leave the Justice League on some occasions. In other cases, Batman collaborates with the Justice League but maintains a more cautious bond with his fellow superheroes. Here are five comic book instances where Batman departed from the Justice League:

1. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” (1985): During this event, Batman left the Justice League to deal with the threat on his own terms, only to return after saving the Multiverse.

As a dedicated DC fan, I can’t help but marvel at the New 52 continuity reboot, a fresh start that unfolded post-Flashpoint. This epic revamp set a new standard for the DC universe, and it all began with an explosive origin story of the Justice League standing strong against Darkseid’s invasion.

In this new timeline, I was thrilled to see Batman still holding his place as a founding member of the Justice League. Yet, what intrigued me most was his reserved approach towards his fellow heroes throughout the New 52 saga. Though he never formally left the league, Batman often found himself working on the periphery of this new continuity.

True to his enigmatic character, Batman played by his own rules within the Justice League. In the New 52, he subtly demonstrated that his membership was more like a flexible commitment rather than an unwavering obligation. His unique blend of teamwork and independence truly made him stand out in this exciting new era of DC storytelling.

4) Injustice: Gods Among Us

Hailing from Netherrealm Studios, the “Injustice” universe encompasses both a video game and comic book series, set in an alternate DC Universe. In this universe, Superman is driven to extremes following the Joker’s actions leading to Lois Lane’s death, the loss of their unborn child, and the destruction of Metropolis with a nuclear bomb. Enraged, Superman takes it upon himself to eliminate crime on Earth by establishing a dictatorship that employs draconian measures. Disgusted by Superman’s descent into brutality, Batman quits the Justice League and establishes a resistance movement against his regime.

The “Injustice” comics expand upon the game’s world, offering an engaging comic book narrative separate from yet complementary to the games. This narrative has since grown into a distinct Elseworlds branch of DC lore. An animated movie based on “Injustice” was released in 2021, and it appears that “Injustice 3” is under development as well.

Overall, “Injustice” serves as another canonical instance of Batman distancing himself from the Justice League in response to Superman’s transformation under this particular incarnation of the Man of Steel.

5) JLA: Tower of Babel

In the comic “JLA: Tower of Babel,” it’s revealed that Batman’s habit of preparing for every possible scenario creates tension within the Justice League. When Ra’s al Ghul attacks using information he found in Batman’s records about each League member’s vulnerability, the team is shocked. Batman admits he kept these secrets to protect them from potential betrayal. Although they stop Ra’s al Ghul, the League considers expelling Batman for this breach of trust. However, before a vote can be cast, Batman resigns from the team, demonstrating one of the most memorable instances where his strategic planning and foresight lead to him stepping away from his closest allies. This story is often cited as the quintessential example of Batman temporarily leaving his dearest allies due to disagreements stemming directly from his signature trait: meticulous planning and contingency preparation.
