Sheinelle Jones Returns to Today After Husband Uche Ojeh’s Death

Sheinelle Jones is taking a major step in her grief journey.

After approximately a year, the host of Today resumed her duties at Studio 1A on September 5, following the sad news of her husband Uche Ojeh’s passing in May.

Upon her heartfelt comeback, she also revealed the reasons behind their decision to keep Uche’s cancer struggle confidential during his illness and after his demise, prior to her departure.

Some people might wonder why Uche didn’t speak up earlier, but as Sheinelle explained while surrounded by her Today family, Uche was very private. He opted for the background while she took center stage, and when he received his diagnosis, he asked for privacy. Over the years, Uche showed incredible protection towards their children, so when it was time to discuss his condition, she felt it was her turn to protect him in return. Loyalty is a two-way street, and they honored that by keeping quiet until now.

In December 2024, Sheinelle, mother to Kayin (age 16), and twins Uche and Clara (age 13) decided to take a step back from her position on Today. This decision followed the diagnosis of glioblastoma in Uche. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, and his passing at the age of 45 was confirmed in a May 23 episode of Today.

During her first conversation with Savannah Guthrie, Sheinelle expressed that she’s managing day by day, but admittedly not fully okay. From a broader perspective, however, she stated that her heart is broken into countless pieces, as the life she has known since she was 19 has abruptly ended.

She mentioned that she had always longed for children and now has three of her own. Tragically, their father passed away, leaving her as their sole parent. It’s a tough situation… Yet, she is proud of how her kids have been coping. Unfortunately, it’s truly heart-wrenching, but she’s managing, staying strong, and finding peace.

It was announced earlier this week on the 2nd of September that Sheinelle will be returning to ‘Today’, a fact confirmed by her colleagues Savannah and Craig Melvin. Prior to her return, Savannah mentioned that they had spent time together to support each other during Sheinelle’s grieving process.

Savannah shared in the September 2nd broadcast that we’ve had a heartfelt discussion about her experiences over the past few months and how she managed to persevere. She refers to this challenging phase as a ‘beautiful nightmare.’ Her insights on grief are deeply moving, and she has a message of encouragement for those dealing with their own hardships, which also carries a strong message of hope.

Speaking from personal experience, I can’t express enough the heartache I felt when hearing about Uche’s challenging situation and the impact it had on Sheinelle and their precious little ones. Truly, Uche was a remarkable individual who touched our lives deeply, and he will always be cherished in our hearts.

Reflecting on Uche in our recent broadcast tribute, I must acknowledge the profound harmony that existed between him and his wife, Sheinelle. Their paths crossed during our shared years at Northwestern University, and over the subsequent 17 years, they blossomed into an exceptional partnership.

Craig mentioned that Uche often spoke fondly of his children during their occasional golf games. He emphasized that Uche held a deep affection for his kids, more so than anything else, and took great pride in them.

Upon coming back to work at Today, Sheinelle expressed a short message of gratitude for the abundance of love shown towards her and her family. In a heartfelt Instagram post soon after her husband’s passing was announced, she expressed appreciation for everyone’s kindness by saying, “Thank you, for your love and support.

Sheinelle Jones frequently shared the story of how she encountered her spouse, Uche Ojeh, during a campus tour at Northwestern University when she was only 19 years old.

In today’s May 23 edition of Today, Savannah Guthrie highlighted the consultant as an exceptional individual, referring to him as “Sheinelle’s ideal companion in life.

As an ardent admirer and follower of Uche’s journey, I can’t help but be moved by his unwavering spirit in the face of glioblastoma. He’s not just a fighter; he’s a man who deeply cherishes his faith and his Nigerian roots. In a heartwarming post from 2021, Sheinelle revealed that for their children’s baptism, they opted to honor Uche’s heritage by dressing them in traditional Nigerian attire, a beautiful testament to their shared cultural heritage.

As the father of kids Kayin, and younger twins Clara and Uche Jr., Uche put his family first.

Craig Melvin underscored during today’s tribute that “he deeply cherished those children above everything else in this world.” He was incredibly proud, serving as the dad who never missed a soccer game, concert, or recital – truly embodying the dedicated father figure.

In today’s broadcast, Al Roker commented that although Uche seemed quiet, he was secretly hilarious. He also mentioned that Uche was a modest individual.

During Uche’s birthday celebration in 2021, Sheinelle made it clear that her husband, who had passed away, was always standing by her throughout the years.

She described on Instagram that when she searches for his picture on her iPhone, it’s mainly filled with photos of them together – be it assisting their children with schoolwork, music, or sports activities. She expressed her gratitude for sharing this journey with such an extraordinary individual.

In the segment dedicated to Uche on Today, Savannah highlighted that Sheinelle and Uche managed to conquer hurdles such as long-distance to sustain their relationship. For Sheinelle, it was absolutely worth it, as she expressed in a tribute post to Uche in 2022, “You first captured my attention when I was 19 years old … and here we are.

In the thick of their most challenging struggle, Savannah underscored that Sheinelle and Uche were truly “fighters” or “brave souls.

In other words, Savannah pointed out that Uche’s cheerful disposition and hidden power beautifully matched Sheinelle.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support that has come our way following the difficult news about Uche. Your compassionate responses have not only provided solace but also strengthened our community during this challenging time. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
