One significant factor contributing to The Conjuring movie series achieving the status as the top-grossing horror franchise ever, is certainly the intrigue surrounding the authentic real-life events that the movies delve into.
In each film from the primary series, a chilling event that the actual Ed and Lorraine Warren encountered in their extensive paranormal investigation work serves as the foundation for an imaginative reenactment of the events.
In a nutshell, while our film maintains the cinematic flair of Hollywood, we strive to include elements that are grounded in reality. After all, it’s gratifying when viewers can watch the movie and identify aspects they might verify online using publicly available documents or resources, which have served as inspirations for our production.
The movie explores an instance where the Smurl family, convinced their house in Pennsylvania was inhabited by a demon, lived with this belief for approximately 15 years starting from the mid-70s up until the late ’80s. It wasn’t until 1986 that the Warrens were invited to look into these allegations.
Wan made it clear that he had a specific motivation for choosing this case as the last cinematic project for both Ed and Lorraine.
He mentioned that there was a TV film titled “The Haunted” from the early 90s, featuring Sally Kirkland. He’s particularly fond of it, appreciating both Sally and the entire cast. This movie was his introduction to Ed and Lorraine Warren, and for him, revisiting this film now feels like a closure in a way – as it was the beginning of his familiarity with these two characters.
My goal is to complete the entire franchise, end this particular film, and wrap up the series by concluding it with a movie that initially sparked my interest.
In my pursuit of portraying these real-life stories on the silver screen authentically, I, along with my creative team, engage in meaningful conversations with the families directly affected. This helps us empathize with their experiences and strive to depict their emotions accurately.
In the making of this latest movie, it’s clear that close collaboration was indeed a key factor, as director Michael Chaves attested to their extensive work involving all four Smurl sisters.
He clarified that they provided assistance and collaborated with us throughout the entire process, from scriptwriting to production. In fact, they were involved in specific details like the house design and even went so far as to personalize a vehicle named Smurl-mobile for the project. This was one of many aspects their family took pride in, serving as a kind of unifying slogan for them.
He stated: “In essence, they were truly exceptional, capturing minute yet impactful details. I firmly believe this enriches the entire experience. Audiences adore these films because they’re rooted in reality, and I think that real-life elements only enhance the overall believability.
Additionally, it provides a more immersive experience for actors, who appreciate being part of a world that seems authentic, as we are essentially re-creating reality.
