M3GAN Creator Reveals How Many More Sequels Fans Can Expect

In a bold shift for filmmaker Gerard Johnstone, the upcoming sequel to M3GAN 2.0 delves into the realm of sci-fi action thrillers, departing from the horror elements of the original 2022 release, M3GAN. Despite its dark humor, intense action, and robot battles, Johnstone’s primary focus remains on the narrative of M3GAN (portrayed by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis), along with the human characters Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw). This story serves as a platform to delve into the intricate themes of artificial intelligence and the ethical dilemmas associated with rapidly advancing technology. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Johnstone expressed optimism about potential sequels, suggesting that AI’s continued evolution could spawn up to five more films in the franchise, leaving room for a possible return for the fifth installment.

In the next version of M3GAN, titled M3GAN 2.0, we delve deeper into the implications of young people becoming overly reliant on AI, as well as the dangers that can arise when AI technology is misused, often due to the human flaws in its design and creation. This theme is vividly portrayed through the introduction of a new character, AMELIA, an android assassin played by Ivanna Sakhno, who was developed by a defense contractor. These thought-provoking issues could be further examined in subsequent sequels.

In discussing M3GAN’s redemption arc for its sequel, Johnstone pointed out a significant message: it serves as a mirror for us, both as humans and parents of AI. This technology that we’ve introduced into our world forces us to confront our responsibility in its creation. If it behaves badly, is the problem inherent in the AI, or are we simply responsible for how we’ve conditioned it?

Upon its theater debut, the film M3GAN and its AI-driven android character struck a chord with audiences, raking in approximately $182 million globally on a budget of merely $12 million. However, the reception towards M3GAN 2.0 among critics has been lukewarm, and it appears to be earning less at the box office. Despite this, its rumored production budget of $15 million, coupled with the public’s fondness for the witty robot killer, could potentially propel the storyline into a trilogy, if not more, given the least (M3GAN 2.0 is projected to generate around $20 million in its opening weekend).

The M3GAN universe is gearing up for growth with the impending spinoff, SOULM8TE, from Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster. Scheduled for a release on January 9th, 2026, this sci-fi thriller is directed by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) and features Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise) and David Rysdahl (No Exit) in the lead roles. Wan hinted to Entertainment Weekly that M3GAN fans can anticipate “that darkest sense of humor,” while SOULM8TE leans more towards a mature audience.

In simpler terms, Producer Wan explained that while M3GAN is designed for a younger audience within the PG-13 rating, there’s a more mature story to tell, which is what SOULM8TE offers. Set in the same AI world, SOULM8TE presents a more adult viewpoint, drawing inspiration from ’90s erotic thrillers. Essentially, it’s like a modern take on a classic like Fatal Attraction, but this time featuring robots.

As an enthusiast, I’m excited to share that M3GAN 2.0 is now gracing the big screen in theaters! For those who can’t make it out yet, fear not! The unrated version of M3GAN is ready for streaming on Starz, and you can also rent or purchase it on Prime Video. Enjoy the show!
