For fans who were raised on the comedic gem, “Wet Hot American Summer,” it’s challenging to find a competitor. However, the film requires a certain connection to fully appreciate its humor. Even if you’re not entirely in sync with this unique and quirky sense of comedy, it offers an enjoyable experience. One particular delight is recognizing numerous pre-fame stars crammed into a single 90-minute movie. Given the initial box office failure and subsequent rise of many cast members to stardom, a sequel seemed unlikely. Yet, the cast’s shared fondness for the film and camaraderie during production made them open to revisiting Camp Firewood.
After 14 years from its initial release, we finally received the Netflix miniseries titled “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp“. Not only was it as good, but it surpassed the original movie.
What Makes Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp the Perfect Follow-Up to the Movie?
First Day at Summer Camp” revolves around an amusing premise – all the actors are approximately fifteen years older than their on-screen characters, portraying younger versions of themselves. This idea is already funny, but what makes this series stand out is that it maintains a fast-paced, humor-filled style for eight episodes without ever becoming too repetitive or grating.
In the film, many characters are assigned quirky, humorous storylines. Yet, only a few undergo significant character transformations, which is beneficial as it preserves their original personalities when the movie’s events commence. Moreover, Wet Hot American Summer isn’t known for character arcs; instead, the characters feel more like real people who don’t typically experience dramatic changes.
The exceptional quality of “First Day of Camp” truly sets it apart, and this is largely due to its exceptional writing. Michael Showalter and David Wain, with Wain once again taking on directorial duties, have honed their skills since the movie was released, yet they’ve managed to retain every ounce of the lively spontaneity that made the film feel so authentic.
It was delightful to witness the group reunited again. Earlier mention was made that most characters don’t undergo complete character arcs. However, Elizabeth Banks’ Lindsay and H. Jon Benjamin from “Bob’s Burgers” are exceptions. We discover that Lindsay is a journalist chasing after a secluded rock star (portrayed appealingly by Chris Pine, demonstrating his knack for comedy as he did in “Horrible Bosses 2”). Moreover, we find out how Mitch transformed into… let’s say, a Can of Mixed Vegetables.
On the First Day of Camp, fresh faces like Jason Schwartzman, Lake Bell, Michaela Watkins, Jon Hamm (portraying The Falcon, a witty assassin who engages in a humorous sparring match with Christopher Meloni’s chef), John Slattery as an elitist Broadway actor-director, and Kristen Wiig and Josh Charles as snobby counselors at Camp Tigerclaw, add novelty to the production. This helps prevent the content from becoming overly reliant on repetitive jokes from the original film.
Regrettably, the 2017 sequel “Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later” didn’t manage to maintain the momentum set by the original. While it’s not a poor series, it lacks much of the impromptu charm that defined the film and its prequel, “First Day of Camp”. The concept for the series was born from a line in the movie, where the counselors promise to reunite after ten years have passed.
Approximately a decade later, the original cast members such as Banks, Benjamin, Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, Christopher Meloni, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and others returned. However, alum of Wet Hot Bradley Cooper couldn’t participate this time around.
Adam Scott takes over from Cooper, as the character Ben reportedly underwent cosmetic surgery. Although losing Cooper might seem significant, given the abundance of talented individuals on board, it’s not enough to sink the ship. However, Ten Years Later seems to be merely maintaining its position rather than making progress. Contrastingly, First Day of Camp, a delight for fans of Wet Hot American Summer , feels like an unexpected and cherished bonus.
