Royal watchers may have done a double take at the funeral of Katharine, Duchess of Kent.
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, attended an event together on September 16th. It was their first public appearance as a couple in over a month, and the duke’s first official outing this year since he stepped down from royal responsibilities in 2019.
Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles III, and his ex-wife Sarah, the Duchess of York, have stayed friends since their divorce in 1996. They even continue to live on the same property, the Royal Lodge estate in Windsor, and share two daughters: Princess Beatrice, 37, and Princess Eugenie, 35.
Andrew and Sarah, both 65, were seen arriving together at Westminster Cathedral in London for the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, who was married to Prince Edward, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Interestingly, despite attending, the Duke of Kent wasn’t featured in any photos of the event that the Royal Family posted online.
Royal watchers may have done a double take at the funeral of Katharine, Duchess of Kent.
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, attended an event together on September 16th. It was their first public appearance as a couple in over a month, and the first official event for the Duke all year. He had previously stepped down from his royal responsibilities in 2019 following controversy related to his association with Jeffrey Epstein. (The Duke has denied any wrongdoing.)
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by how families navigate change, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are a perfect example. Even after their divorce back in 1996, they’ve managed to maintain a really admirable friendship. What’s even more remarkable is that they’ve chosen to continue living on the same estate, the Royal Lodge in Windsor, and are raising their daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, nearby. It just goes to show that you can redefine family dynamics and still create a supportive environment, which is something I always encourage my clients to strive for.
Andrew and Sarah, both 65 years old, were photographed arriving together at Westminster Cathedral in London for the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, who was married to Prince Edward, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.
Last year, Sarah talked about her relationship with Andrew, someone she’s known since childhood.
In an interview with *The Sunday Times* in December 2024, the duchess recalled meeting Andrew when she was twelve years old. She said she immediately knew she would marry him. They reconnected in 1985 when Princess Diana invited her to Ascot, and just six months later, they were engaged.
She continued, saying she was deeply in love with Andrew. She’d make the same choices again without hesitation. She described him as a wonderful and kind person, and said their wedding day was the happiest of her life.
Marrying into the Royal family, however, comes at a price.
Sarah explained that she revealed her true identity that day, driven by the belief that love overcomes everything. She believes that power of love continues to exist now.
Sarah also relayed a promise to her ex.
She vowed she wouldn’t disappoint him, explaining that they support each other equally. He’s been there for her through all of life’s ups and downs, far beyond just their relationship status. Their strong connection is built on open communication, a willingness to compromise, and genuine compassion.
