I’m so excited! *Futurama* is back on Hulu with a brand new season, and David X. Cohen, one of the show’s producers, has given us a little hint of what’s to come, especially regarding what might be *another* series finale! They’ve already started working on Season 14, which is amazing, but it also brings up this funny situation: *Futurama* has had so many finales already, figuring out how to end it for good is getting trickier and trickier. It’s a good problem to have, though, right?
To mark the debut of *Futurama* Season 13 on Hulu, ComicBook recently interviewed executive producer David X. Cohen about the new episodes. Cohen discussed the possibility of another series finale – something he’d hinted at during San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer – and explained that crafting a satisfying ending is becoming more challenging as the characters have evolved. He also shared that an especially emotional episode is planned for the character of Fry.
Futurama’s Executive Producer Teases the Show’s Next Finale
According to Cohen, the show faces a rare challenge in television history: needing to prepare multiple series finales. Because the show has been revived several times-five or six, and with ten episodes planned for both this year and next-they aren’t facing an immediate crisis. However, they’ve already started writing a potential finale for 2026, which would be their sixth. He explained that, when they wrote it, it could have realistically been the show’s last episode. He also noted that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to pinpoint definitive ending points for the series.
Cohen explained that crafting new episodes is becoming more challenging. In the past, they often focused on Fry and Leela’s future, but now that they’ve explored that a bit, they’re aiming for a poignant, but not necessarily final, feel. He emphasized that he doesn’t want to rule out the possibility of future stories and believes the characters continue to exist even when they’re not on screen, preferring to end on a heartfelt note. He also hinted that the next potential series finale will explore Fry’s childhood, which he feels will be emotionally resonant, building on themes from previous episodes and fitting well with the overall narrative.
What Does This Mean for Futurama’s Future?
As Cohen notes, *Futurama* is unusual because its creators have written several series finales – the show has been cancelled and brought back multiple times over the years. What truly sets it apart is the team’s dedication to giving the show a meaningful and emotionally resonant conclusion each time. While most animated sitcoms don’t prioritize such endings, *Futurama* consistently does.
I’ve noticed that whenever *Futurama* has ended in the past, it always felt complete, but also like the characters’ stories weren’t truly over – they could easily continue having adventures. That’s what’s made it so great for all the revivals, like this new one on Hulu, and it means the show could be back again after Season 14. But even if this *is* the final season, *Futurama* seems prepared to deliver another satisfying ending.
