This month’s best free game on PlayStation Plus is surprisingly a title originally made for Xbox. Last month, however, the service offered a game that launched simultaneously with the PlayStation 5, or at least was only available on PlayStation and PC. A ‘console exclusive’ simply means a game you can only play on one type of console, alongside its PC version. While it’s rare to get games on PS Plus the day they’re released, last month was an exception, with two new titles – and one of them was particularly well-received.
The free PlayStation Plus game, *Sword of the Sea*, is generating a lot of positive buzz. The top post on the PS Plus Reddit page calls it “amazing,” highlighting its length, music, and how well it uses the PS5 DualSense controller. The poster also said they haven’t enjoyed a game this much in a long time.
“Amazing”
A recent post raves about *Sword of the Sea*, calling it “amazing.” The player was thrilled they decided to try the game and quickly finished it, praising its perfect level of engagement, lack of dialogue, fantastic soundtrack, and innovative use of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense features. They say it’s been a long time since they’ve enjoyed a game this much and expressed gratitude for PlayStation Plus for making it available.
This post itself isn’t particularly remarkable, but it’s part of a larger trend. The fact that it gained traction and many people agreed with it shows this viewpoint is actually quite widespread.
The most popular comment on the post simply said, “Same! It was a really nice surprise.” The commenter explained they initially thought the game would be a good distraction, but ended up wanting to keep playing and exploring its beautiful, relaxing world.
Another player shared, “I really enjoyed this! It’s relaxing and visually stunning, and each level just gets better and better.”
About the Game
The recently released PlayStation 5 game is receiving excellent reviews, currently holding an 88 on Metacritic and ranking as one of the top 15 games of 2025. It’s available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, but only those with Extra or Premium memberships – it’s not included with the basic Essential plan.
This game is the third release from developer Giant Squad, known for *Abzu* (2016) and *The Pathless* (2020). It’s an atmospheric adventure where you explore and try to revive a forgotten ocean by gliding across sand and water. You navigate using a unique ‘Hoversword’ that feels like a blend of skateboarding and snowboarding.
So, if you’re a PlayStation Plus member and want to try out this PS5 game, just a heads-up: you can probably finish the main story in about 2 to 4 hours. But if you’re a completionist like me and want to find *everything*, expect to spend closer to 10. Either way, let me know what you think in the comments, or join the discussion over on the ComicBook Forum!
