It’s been nearly six years since Star Wars first ventured into live-action television. *The Mandalorian* quickly became a hit, proving that the franchise could succeed on the small screen – something creator George Lucas had previously attempted, without success, with a planned show called *Star Wars Underworld*. This success sparked a wave of new shows within Lucasfilm, including spin-offs like *The Book of Boba Fett*, *Ahsoka*, and *Skeleton Crew*, as well as prequel series, most notably *Andor*, which many consider to be the best Star Wars TV show yet.
Disney heavily promoted its streaming service, Disney+, and Marvel Studios worked alongside this effort. However, things are shifting, particularly with the future of Star Wars television. In 2025, only one live-action series, *Andor* Season 2, was released, and only one is currently planned for 2026: *Ahsoka* Season 2. Currently, there are no further live-action Star Wars shows scheduled, meaning *Ahsoka*’s second season will be the last for the time being, effectively ending the franchise’s run on Disney+.
Why Star Wars’ Live-Action Future Is Focused On Movies, Not TV Shows

I’ve noticed Disney is shifting its focus again, and honestly, I’m thrilled! It feels like they initially jumped headfirst into streaming with Disney+, which was great for shows like *The Mandalorian*, but they’re now realizing how important the movie theater experience is – especially for something as epic as Star Wars. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Star Wars film on the big screen – *The Rise of Skywalker* came out way back in 2019, just as Disney+ was launching. It’s good to see them prioritizing those cinematic moments again.
Lucasfilm is addressing past issues by focusing on theatrical releases, and the clearest sign of this shift is what happens next with *The Mandalorian*. Instead of a fourth season of the show, the story will continue as a movie, *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, scheduled for 2026. Following that, *Star Wars: Starfighter*, starring Ryan Gosling, is planned. While no other films have confirmed release dates, several projects are in the works, including a movie about Rey building a new Jedi Order with Daisy Ridley reprising her role, a film called *Dawn of the Jedi* directed by James Mangold, a trilogy planned by Simon Kinberg, and a project from Taika Waititi that’s still in development.
While the Star Wars franchise is shifting its focus, animation will remain important. It’s been a key part of Star Wars for over two decades, and there are several animated projects on the way. Later this year, we’ll see *Star Wars: Visions*, followed by a spin-off series, *Star Wars: Visions Presents*, in 2026. Another animated project, *Maul: Shadow Lord*, is also planned for 2026. Lucasfilm appears dedicated to continuing animation, but it remains to be seen if live-action shows will receive the same level of support.
Will There Be More Live-Action Star Wars TV Shows?

When *Ahsoka* was originally announced in 2020, it was one of many series intended to demonstrate Disney+’s commitment to Star Wars content. Now, most of those initial shows have either finished airing or been cancelled. *Andor* completed its planned two seasons, and *The Acolyte* was cancelled after just one. *Skeleton Crew* didn’t generate much excitement, making a second season improbable, and *The Book of Boba Fett* appears to have been abandoned, with no plans for further episodes since its 2021 release.
The cast of *Obi-Wan Kenobi* still mentions the possibility of a second season, but it seems like wishful thinking. While Lucasfilm might revisit the idea, the future of *Ahsoka* is also uncertain, though a third season isn’t out of the question considering the character’s popularity. Currently, the plan is for these shows to lead up to a major movie that wraps up the *Mandalorian* storyline. So, while anything is possible with Lucasfilm, don’t count on *Ahsoka* getting another season.
Disney+ had once planned a series called *Lando* starring Donald Glover, but those plans are now shifting towards a movie – though it doesn’t seem likely to happen soon, if at all. Another previously announced series, *Rangers of the New Republic*, was canceled after Gina Carano was let go by Disney. Now that she’s settled her lawsuit with Disney, a return is possible, but it would probably be within a larger project rather than reviving the original spinoff series.
We can likely expect more live-action Star Wars shows on Disney+ eventually, as the service will continue to need new content to keep viewers and investors happy. However, it looks like there will be a temporary slowdown and a strategic reassessment of the franchise’s direction. The period from 2019, when Star Wars was a primary focus for Disney+, appears to be over. If this leads to better Star Wars films and shows, and makes new releases feel special again, that’s a positive change.
Season 2 of *Ahsoka* is being filmed now and will be available on Disney+ in 2026. *The Mandalorian* and *Grogu* will arrive in movie theaters on May 22, 2026, and a new movie called *Starfighter* is planned for release on May 28, 2027.
