The director makes a compelling case for a potential Lex Luthor anti-hero twist.
Following the huge success of *Superman*, director James Gunn has given many interviews, sharing insights into how he made the film and developed its characters. He recently spoke with The Ringer-Verse, discussing his plans for the DC Universe and *Superman*-particularly the iconic villain Lex Luthor. Gunn even revealed he identifies with Luthor more than any other character.
When asked what he enjoyed most about portraying Lex Luthor in *Man of Tomorrow* and future projects, James Gunn shared, careful not to reveal any spoilers, that viewers have already seen Lex’s villainous side. He described Lex as a truly evil and dangerous character, but also noted that he finds the character fascinating.
Could We See Lex Get The Hero Treatment?
James Gunn doesn’t see Lex Luthor as a typical villain. He explained that despite everything Lex does, there’s something admirable about him. Gunn pointed out that Lex, even when facing someone with superpowers, is driven by a fierce desire to prove he’s superior. He finds Lex’s determination, ego, and unmatched ambition strangely heroic, setting aside any moral considerations.
Man of Tomorrow Might Push Lex Luthor Into the Forefront
While not a direct continuation of the previous *Superman* movie, *Man of Tomorrow* will still feature David Corenswet in an important role. Recent comments suggest the film will heavily focus on Lex Luthor – exploring his origins and rivalry with Superman – with Nicholas Hoult playing a prominent part. We can also expect to see Lex Luthor’s Warsuit make its on-screen debut, a piece of technology hinted at when the sequel was announced.
