A new zombie game launched this week on PC and all major consoles. While we don’t yet know how it’s performing on PlayStation and Xbox, it’s already proving popular on Steam, with over 100,000 people playing at the same time. In fact, it hit a peak of 115,278 concurrent players on Steam in just two days, placing it among the top 160 most-played games of all time on the platform. This makes it one of the most successful game launches on Steam so far this year.
The new zombie game, *Dying Light: The Beast*, started as planned downloadable content for *Dying Light 2*, but became its own separate game – the third in the series. It’s proving to be popular, combining the best features of the previous titles, and currently has a Metacritic score of 80. However, player numbers are a bit lower than *Dying Light 2*’s peak of nearly 275,000 players three years ago. This is understandable, as *Dying Light 2* was a major sequel, while *The Beast* is more like a large, standalone expansion – so it’s a significant drop, but not a concerning one.
About the Game:
Techland, the Polish studio behind the *Dying Light* series, created *Dying Light: The Beast*. This spin-off continues the story after *Dying Light: The Following*, focusing on Kyle Crane. After escaping years of imprisonment and painful experiments that altered his DNA with zombie genetics, Crane – now part human, part zombie – seeks revenge on the man responsible, known as the Baron. He must control his own monstrous side while battling zombies in the dangerous Castor Woods to achieve his goal.
While *Dying Light: The Beast* introduces some new gameplay elements with its unique take on zombies, it still feels very much like a traditional *Dying Light* experience. Because it’s a smaller project with a limited budget, the game is more focused and streamlined than the main *Dying Light* titles. Looking ahead, it’s unclear what Techland will do, especially after canceling some planned games. They’ll likely concentrate on what they know best and begin development on *Dying Light 3*.
If you’re planning to buy *Dying Light: The Beast*, it costs $60. We’d love to hear your thoughts – feel free to leave a comment or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum! Are you getting this new release, or are you waiting for the next full game in the *Dying Light* series?
