It’s been over 40 years since Nick Castle first terrified audiences as Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis debuted as Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s original Halloween. That 1978 film launched a hugely popular slasher franchise that now includes 13 movies, with varying degrees of success. Although 2022’s Halloween Ends was controversial, one sequel consistently stands out as a fan favorite, and it’s currently available to stream for free as Halloween approaches.
Tubi started streaming the 2018 film *Halloween* alongside a wave of other horror releases on September 1st. This movie is the first in a three-part series directed by David Gordon Green, and the eleventh installment overall in the *Halloween* franchise. It essentially reboots the series, focusing again on the conflict between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. The film is a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s original 1978 *Halloween*, picking up the story 40 years later. Laurie, still haunted by the past, finds herself facing Michael Myers once more as he threatens her family, but this time, she’s ready to fight back.
Why You Should Watch Halloween (2018)
The *Halloween* series has seen its share of unsuccessful sequels, but 2018’s *Halloween* is a notable exception. It’s a strong continuation of the original 1978 film and a particularly impressive revival for the horror franchise. Critics and audiences alike responded positively, giving it a 79% “Certified Fresh” rating and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. These scores make it the second highest-rated film in the entire series-behind only the first *Halloween*-and the best-received film within director David Gordon Green’s recent trilogy.
As a huge horror fan, I was genuinely thrilled with the 2018 *Halloween*. It felt like a real return to what made the original so great, completely ignoring the other sequels and picking up the story right where it left off. Seeing Jamie Lee Curtis back as Laurie Strode, after all these years – it had been since *Halloween: Resurrection* back in 2002! – and Nick Castle *in* the Michael Myers mask again, for the first time since the original 1978 film, was just amazing. And John Carpenter’s involvement with the score, alongside his son Cody and Daniel Davies, really added to the suspense. Michael is genuinely terrifying again, the kills are brutal, and while the story expands on what we know, it also feels like a loving tribute to the classic. Honestly, if you’re a *Halloween* fan, you absolutely *have* to see this one.
