The new animated series, Marvel Zombies, from Marvel Studios will explore the fate of a powerful weapon that, surprisingly, was able to defeat Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) was nearly unstoppable throughout the Infinity Saga, particularly in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, this weapon theoretically had the power to defeat him – despite a consistent track record of failure.
Tony Stark defeated Thanos by using the Infinity Stones, but it cost him his life. Thor, however, fought the Mad Titan differently, relying on powerful weapons like his hammer, Mjolnir, and his father’s spear, Gungnir. Soon, Thor’s most powerful weapon will return, but unfortunately, it looks like Stormbreaker won’t have a very impactful role.
Marvel Zombies’ Trailer Repeats Thor’s Stormbreaker Move

The animated series *Marvel Zombies* will premiere on Disney+ on September 24, 2025. It continues the story begun in the *What If…?* episode “What If… Zombies?!” A recently released trailer has generated excitement for the show, which will depict both the beginning of the zombie outbreak and what happened after the events of the *What If…?* episode. We’ll see the return of characters like Spider-Man and Black Panther, and even Ant-Man’s head – remember he was traveling to Wakanda with the Mind Stone, hoping to use its energy to cure everyone?
In Wakanda, alternate versions of Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Ant-Man will face a zombie Thanos who already controls five of the six Infinity Stones. The trailer shows Spider-Man attempting to defeat Thanos with the Stormbreaker axe, mirroring Thor’s attack in the 2018 film *Avengers: Infinity War*. Unfortunately, like Thor before him, Spider-Man won’t be able to defeat Thanos with the axe, even though it will pierce his chest in the same way it did during the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 3.
The zombie version of Thanos was first shown at the end of season one, episode five of *What If…?*, hinting at a continuation of the story set in a world overrun by zombies. This outbreak started when Hank Pym tried to rescue Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, as seen in the movie *Ant-Man and the Wasp* (2018). Unfortunately, she returned with a Quantum Virus that quickly spread, infecting many people on Earth, including several well-known heroes. Hudson Thames will once again voice Spider-Man in the new series, *Marvel Zombies*, and he’ll be joined by a talented new cast of voice actors.
What is Stormbreaker’s History in the MCU?

In the climactic battle of *Avengers: Infinity War*, Thanos arrived in Wakanda and faced off against the combined forces of the Avengers and the Wakandan army, who were already defending against Thanos’s allies: Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Cull Obsidian, and the Outriders. Despite their efforts, no one could defeat Thanos, though Thor came very close with Stormbreaker, a powerful ax he’d created in Nidavellir. Stormbreaker was strong enough to endure the energy of all six Infinity Stones and even pierced Thanos’ chest, but as fans know, Thor really needed to aim for the head.
Despite the attack, Thanos was still able to snap his fingers and carry out his plan, retreating to the Garden. Thor ultimately defeated him there by using Stormbreaker to sever his head, fulfilling the weapon’s intended purpose. However, it was too late – Thanos had already wiped out half of all life in the universe. The upcoming series, *Marvel Zombies*, will echo Thor’s critical failure in *Avengers: Infinity War* by preventing Spider-Man from finishing off the zombified Thanos with Stormbreaker.
Stormbreaker could have won the day in both *Infinity War* and *Marvel Zombies* if it had aimed for the head. In *Infinity War*, decapitating Thanos would have prevented the Blip and saved countless lives. In *Marvel Zombies*, it would have eliminated the zombie version of Thanos, protecting the remaining heroes. However, after the events of *Marvel Zombies*, Stormbreaker will only have succeeded in one out of three attempts, a surprisingly low success rate for such a powerful weapon in the MCU.
