Sheinelle Jones continues to navigate a difficult chapter.
Savannah Guthrie returned to hosting Today on September 5th, four months after the passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh. The transition back to work has been challenging for her and their children: 16-year-old Kayin, and 13-year-old twins, Clara and Uche.
Sheinelle, 47, explained that while her family had supported each other through their sadness, they really felt the loss of her husband once everyday life returned to normal.
After the busy start of school and work, things became difficult on Friday when we got home,” Sheinelle explained to Jenna Bush Hager on the September 22nd episode of *Today With Jenna & Friends*. “It was tough because we didn’t have anything to look forward to after that initial push.
She added, “It was just like, ‘Oh this is it. This is life.’ Kind of sucks.”
Sheinelle, who had been married to Uche for 18 years, shared how deeply she felt his loss as she continued her career without his support.
She described Saturday mornings as difficult. It was a time for reflection, often filled with regrets about the past week – replaying conversations and wishing she’d handled things differently. To make things even harder, her coach and life partner was unavailable.
Wiping away tears, she explained that the days following her first week were difficult as she adjusted to what felt like her new everyday life.
Sheinelle took time away from her role on *Today* at the end of 2024 after her husband, Uche, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. Sadly, Uche passed away in May after fighting the disease for a year. He was 45 years old.
For Jenna, seeing her friend and cohost find strength in her tragedy was a reason to celebrate.
Jenna shared with Sheinelle, “I truly haven’t met anyone with more strength. I needed to tell you that. It’s been amazing to watch everything you’ve been through and how you’ve handled it over the past year.”
She recalled attending his funeral and being struck by its beauty, even having attended many state funerals before. She specifically credited the person she was speaking to with creating such a moving and memorable experience.
It’s been so tough thinking about Uche lately, especially with their wedding anniversary coming up. Sheinelle recently shared how much I, and everyone who knew them, has missed them since they passed – it really put into words how deeply we all feel their absence.
You know, I was reflecting the other day on what would have been my 18th wedding anniversary this month. It really felt like my husband and I had something special, a true partnership. Even during the most difficult time, watching him pass away, I’d think, ‘This is awful, this is frightening.’ But honestly? If someone had told me that this was how things would end, I wouldn’t change a single moment. I’d go through it all again, absolutely.
