Eddie Brock, better known as Venom, is a major and incredibly strong enemy of Spider-Man. He became Venom after bonding with an alien suit that Spider-Man had previously rejected. This suit gave Eddie immense power and allowed him to relentlessly torment Spider-Man. As Venom, Eddie is far stronger than Spider-Man and, due to their connection, knows everything about Spider-Man’s personal life. They’ve fought many times, and Spider-Man usually barely manages to win. Despite this, Venom has repeatedly defeated and embarrassed Spider-Man, solidifying his reputation as one of his most dangerous foes.
Venom has repeatedly shown himself to be a dangerous foe for Spider-Man, both physically and emotionally. Here are seven instances where he proved just how deadly he can be.
7) Venom’s First Appearance Caught Spider-Man Off-Guard
When Eddie Brock first bonded with the Symbiote (becoming Venom), their main goal was to destroy Spider-Man’s life. A key weakness of Spider-Man is that his Spider-Sense can’t detect Venom, and Venom consistently takes advantage of this. In *The Amazing Spider-Man #300*, Venom surprised Spider-Man with an ambush, quickly winning the fight with his greater strength and speed. Spider-Man attempted to use a special gun to separate Eddie Brock from the Symbiote, but their connection was too strong to break. As Spider-Man tried to escape, Venom easily caught him and knocked him unconscious. Venom then restrained Spider-Man, intending to kill him in a deadly trap. While Spider-Man ultimately escaped and won, the initial fight where Venom quickly defeated him was one of his most crushing losses.
6) Venom Pulverizes Spider-Man Before Their Team-Up
Venom often exploits Spider-Man’s personal life, particularly by targeting those he cares about. A prime example is when Peter Parker’s parents, who had been thought lost, suddenly reappeared. Venom immediately seized this opportunity, kidnapping them in *The Amazing Spider-Man #375* and holding them hostage. When Spider-Man tried to rescue his parents and stop Venom, the villain proved too strong, brutally attacking Spider-Man and knocking him unconscious by repeatedly slamming his head against a Ferris wheel support. The situation escalated when Venom’s former wife, Anne, attempted to help, causing the Ferris wheel to collapse and nearly crush her. Spider-Man, regaining consciousness at the last moment, managed to help Venom save Anne. As a result of Spider-Man saving her life, Venom surprisingly agreed to team up with Spider-Man to hunt down and defeat the dangerous villain Carnage.
5) Venom Defeats Spider-Man and Superman Simultaneously
Back in 1992, DC Comics and Marvel teamed up for a special event called *DC/Marvel All Access*, which brought heroes and villains from both universes together. The first issue featured Spider-Man and Superman working together to stop Venom from causing chaos in Superman’s city, Metropolis. Surprisingly, even though Superman is incredibly strong, Venom managed to overpower him. In fact, Venom was strong enough to fight both Superman and Spider-Man at the same time, even holding them both by the throat! Just when it seemed like Venom would win, a hero named Access showed up and used a sonic weapon to knock Venom unconscious. It’s pretty unbelievable that Venom could actually overpower both Spider-Man and Superman at once.
4) Spider-Man Lives Because Venom Allows It
As a huge Venom and Spider-Man fan, I’ve always wondered why Venom doesn’t just *finish* Spider-Man off, considering all the chances he’s had. Well, the comics actually explain it, and it’s pretty chilling. In *Venom #11*, Venom lays it all out: he doesn’t want to *kill* Spider-Man, he wants to break him. He’d rather leave Spider-Man alive, constantly terrified, knowing Venom could strike at any moment. It’s a really messed up reveal that shows just how much Venom despises Spider-Man, and how he prefers to inflict psychological torment rather than just a physical beating. It’s a truly disturbing look into the symbiote’s mind.
3) Venom Hunts Spider-Man on a Tropical Island
When Spider-Man and Venom fight, other heroes often show up to help. However, in *The Amazing Spider-Man #347*, Venom devised a plan to make sure no one would interrupt their battle. He kidnapped Spider-Man and took him to a faraway tropical island for a one-on-one fight. Without buildings to swing from, Spider-Man couldn’t use his webs to dodge Venom’s attacks. Knowing he was outmatched, Spider-Man cleverly disguised a skeleton in his costume to *look* like his own body, faking his death. While Venom celebrated his win, Spider-Man snuck away and swam off the island, escaping in one of his most embarrassing defeats.
2) Venom Fights Spider-Man in a Meatpacking Factory
Spider-Man was terrified of Venom again in *The Amazing Spider-Man #316*. Venom deliberately attacked Spider-Man’s friend, Black Cat, to get to him. Spider-Man tried to fight back, but Venom was simply too strong, knocking him through the wall of a meatpacking plant with one punch. Though badly injured, Spider-Man managed to briefly slow Venom down by dropping tons of machinery on him. Realizing this wouldn’t stop Venom for long, Spider-Man quickly retreated. Venom easily freed himself and discovered where Spider-Man lived, already plotting his next attack.
1) The Symbiote Reclaims Spider-Man
The connection between Spider-Man and the Symbiote has been problematic ever since they first joined during *Secret Wars*. Even after Spider-Man separated from the alien, the Symbiote constantly sought to reconnect with him. Currently, in *Venom: Space Knight #11*, the Symbiote isn’t bonded with Eddie Brock; instead, it’s attached to Flash Thompson, one of Spider-Man’s former high school bullies.
It was intense watching Spider-Man try to save Flash from the Symbiote! He threw everything he had at it – gadgets, you name it – but it barely slowed the thing down. Then, the Symbiote just *changed*, growing huge and really going to town on Spidey. He got seriously beat up, and that’s when the Symbiote saw its chance to re-bond with him. Even though it eventually let him go, seemingly as a gesture of… well, I don’t know if ‘goodwill’ is the right word, it really showed how dangerous that alien is, even *without* a host. It was a clear demonstration of how easily it can overpower Spider-Man.
