A new trailer just dropped for one of Xbox’s upcoming, and still very puzzling, games. Honestly, it’s still anyone’s guess what the game actually is!
At the 2022 Xbox Developer Direct, Microsoft and Hideo Kojima announced a new game called “OD.” The announcement followed a clever marketing campaign that led many to believe Kojima was bringing back his famous “P.T.” project.
Hideo Kojima was once developing a new Silent Hill game for Konami. He released a short, interactive demo called “P.T.” on the PlayStation store, which ultimately revealed that Norman Reedus would be the star of the game, then titled Silent Hills.
P.T. was a truly terrifying first-person horror game, and even though it was brief and straightforward, it’s become a landmark title in horror gaming. The playable demo was incredibly frightening, and its cancellation was a huge disappointment for fans who wondered what could have been if Konami and Hideo Kojima hadn’t parted ways. Hopefully, the upcoming project “OD” will capture some of that same magic.
OD, a new game created by Hideo Kojima and renowned horror director Jordan Peele, features incredibly realistic characters thanks to Unreal Engine’s advanced technology and a talented cast. Today, Kojima Productions and Xbox surprised fans with a fresh look at the game.
Hideo Kojima is the celebrated creator of the hugely popular Metal Gear Solid series, a franchise that continues to impact video games today. The series is known for its surprisingly accurate predictions and thought-provoking stories, giving it lasting appeal. Kojima worked with Konami on Metal Gear for many years, but was unexpectedly let go when Konami prioritized quicker and less expensive game development.
After leaving Konami, Hideo Kojima founded Kojima Productions and created the highly praised game, Death Stranding. Death Stranding later became available on Xbox, and the sequel, Death Stranding 2, has been well-received on PlayStation 5, with a PC version and possible Xbox release expected. Microsoft is also collaborating with Kojima Productions on a new horror game called “OD,” though specific details are still unknown.
Hideo Kojima recently shared that his team is collaborating with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to develop something truly innovative-a new kind of game, or even a new form of entertainment altogether. While the exact details are still unknown, concerns arose after Xbox made some cuts earlier this summer, leading some to believe the project might be cancelled. However, we’ve confirmed that the game, known as OD, is still in development, and today’s trailer provides further proof.
The new trailer features Sophia Lillis, known for her roles in IT and Dungeons & Dragons, performing a ritual in a mostly empty room. She’s shown lighting different candles, which appear to be controlled by the player.
Sounds from other parts of the house interrupt the silence, and a baby starts crying as the candle burns lower. One candle starts dripping what looks like blood instead of wax, while another begins to release worms. Suddenly, a mysterious being appears and violently grabs the main character, played by Sophia Lillis, by the face.
The Unreal Engine’s “MetaHuman” technology is truly impressive, creating incredibly realistic digital people for games. Hideo Kojima describes his new game, OD, as a unique and experimental title exploring the theme of fear – and perhaps even being overwhelmed by it, which inspired the game’s name. While the exact gameplay is still unknown, it will utilize Xbox’s cloud technology in some way.
The incredibly realistic visuals in this project are likely due to Unreal Engine’s “MetaHuman” technology, which captures even the smallest facial expressions that older techniques miss. This allows Sophia Lillis to deliver a natural performance, showing subtle details like trembling lips and shaky eyes – effects that would normally require painstaking hand-animation. This project feels like a turning point, as digital acting often feels artificial, but this takes it to a new level. The new trailer for “Knock” showcases just how far things have come.
As of right now, we don’t have a firm release date for OD. It was originally announced for Xbox and Windows, but given Microsoft’s recent focus on releasing games on multiple platforms, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it come to PlayStation as well. I’m keeping a close eye on Xbox’s presentations at Tokyo Game Show this week – I expect we’ll learn more about OD then.
