Whenever a video game gets turned into a movie, people usually wonder if it will simply rehash the game’s existing story. This question came up when A24 announced a *Death Stranding* movie. However, during a livestream earlier this week, Hideo Kojima and director Michael Sarnoski confirmed the movie will tell a brand new, original story, not just retell what happens in the games.
Sarnoski explained that the movie’s story will capture the spirit and main ideas of the game, but it will also be entirely original. He added that the film will introduce us to new characters as well.
As a huge fan, what excites me most about this project is that the team really wants to get to the heart of what makes the game special – the core themes and feeling of the world. But they’re not just retelling the same story! They want to introduce us to new characters and explore parts of the world we haven’t seen before, really digging deep into both the big picture and the smaller, personal stories. They want to do the world justice, and I think that’s awesome.
He explained the challenge of crafting a fresh, unique story within the established world of the games. Sarnoski hopes the movie will appeal to both newcomers and longtime fans of *Death Stranding*, making the universe more accessible while still offering something new for those already familiar with it.

Earlier this year, Kojima discussed the upcoming *Death Stranding* movie, praising director Sam Sarnoski as a smart and tasteful choice. On his Koji10 radio show, he also described the film as being incredibly unique and unusual.
The film adaptation of *Death Stranding* was originally announced in 2022. Hideo Kojima will co-produce the movie alongside Alex Lebovici, who was an executive producer on *Barbarian*. Kojima Productions US and Allan Ungar are also executive producers, and Hammerstone Studios is providing the funding.
A24 signed on to produce the film adaptation in 2023. The company is well-respected for making critically acclaimed movies in many different genres, including hits like *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, *Uncut Gems*, *Hereditary*, and *Midsommar*.
