The Old Guard 3: Will Netflix Continue the Epic Saga After That Shocking Cliffhanger?

*Warning – contains full spoilers for The Old Guard 2*

Following a five-year gap, enthusiasts of the Netflix series The Old Guard can now reconnect with Charlize Theron’s character Andy and her squad in the sequel movie titled The Old Guard 2.

Audiences who’ve seen the entire film are currently discussing its conclusion, as it finishes off with a significant twist, leaving the main characters in danger and offering no clear resolution to the storyline.

In conversation with ScreenRant, Director Victoria Mahoney explained that the film’s conclusion wasn’t intentionally left open-ended but rather evolved organically as they grappled with the movie’s main ideas.

Mahoney expressed that those who initiated it sparked a sense of amazement, curiosity, and optimism within him. What captivated him wasn’t the journey itself, but rather the emotional resonance of wonderment, hope, resilience, determination, and unity it evoked.

“As far as it being a cliffhanger, I don’t know how to approach things as a mechanism.”

So, is it suggesting that another installment of the series could be on its way, leaving fans curious about the fates of their beloved characters following the ending of the second film?

Read on for everything we know about The Old Guard 3.

Will there be The Old Guard 3?

As a passionate moviegoer, I must admit that the thrilling climax of The Old Guard 2 seems to hint at another installment. However, it’s important to note that, as of now, we haven’t received any official confirmation about a sequel being in development.

Victoria Mahoney, who directed the second movie, shared with Entertainment Weekly that she honestly doesn’t have an answer when inquired about the possibility of a third film. Furthermore, she mentioned that she’s unsure of the happenings beyond the confines of the current room.

As a devoted admirer, I must confess my bafflement. Yet, I eagerly anticipate the outcome, hoping it resonates with audiences, and that every performer in that third piece enjoys themselves immensely, giving their best performances and excelling beyond expectations. From afar, I’ll be cheering them on, rooting for their success. Truly, passionately yours.

It appears that if a third movie is made, Netflix might have to look for a different director since Mahoney seems to have decided not to participate.

When talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Charlize Theron admitted that she wasn’t confident about the possibility of a third movie.

One valuable lesson I’ve gleaned from this line of work is that nothing is ever certain. It’s genuinely thoughtful of Netflix not to compel us to alter our path.

We aimed to end the movie here, as it echoes our initial effort. Consequently, we approached this production identically. However, I’m truthfully admitting that we are utterly clueless about what the third film might resemble.

For the time being, it appears we’ll need to observe the performance of the second movie on Netflix, as its success is expected to play a crucial role in deciding if The Old Guard 3 gets approved for production.

When would The Old Guard 3 be released?

Since The Old Guard 3 hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s uncertain when we might expect its release. There was quite a gap between the premieres of the first two films – the initial film debuted in 2020, while the second one just came out in 2025, a span of five years.

Nevertheless, some external conditions caused a delay in the release of The Old Guard 2. The filming was carried out in 2022, but it encountered a slight delay when a fire broke out on the set.

The film’s post-production was temporarily halted as well, according to reports, because of shifts in leadership at Netflix.

Let’s cross our fingers that if a third movie gets approved, its path to the big screen will be more seamless. Assuming this happens, we envision that the earliest possible release date might be around 2027.

We will keep this page updated if we get any updates.

Who would return to star in The Old Guard 3?

Since The Old Guard 2 concludes with a significant plot twist, it’s highly likely that the actors playing the characters with unresolved storylines will need to reprise their roles for a potential third movie.

In other words, along with Charlize Theron, it’s likely that KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, and Henry Golding will reappear, while Uma Thurman is expected to come back as the antagonist, Discord.

In the second movie, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see Matthias Schoenaerts again, as his character Booker met his demise towards the end.

Here’s a list of the central cast for The Old Guard 2 who we’d expect to return for a third film:

  • Charlize Theron as Andromache ‘Andy’ of Scythia
  • KiKi Layne as Nile
  • Marwan Kenzari as Joe
  • Luca Marinelli as Nicky
  • Veronica Van as Quynh
  • Henry Golding as Tuah
  • Uma Thurman as Discord
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley
