Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora gets major story expansion — and a third-person mode

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora came out in December 2023. This first-person adventure game is set in the world of James Cameron’s Avatar, but in a brand new area of Pandora called the Western Frontier, which hasn’t been seen in the movies.

The game’s story starts around the same time as the first movie. You’ll play as a Na’vi who was separated from their family as a child and raised by the human organization, the RDA. After being frozen for years, you wake up to a planet at war and have to rediscover your Na’vi roots while fighting against the RDA’s destructive actions.

Since its launch, the game has been significantly updated with three major patches and two expansions to the story. Ubisoft has consistently added to the game by introducing new areas to explore, groups to interact with, and ways to play.

But that’s not all! We have another big update planned for December 5, 2025. Then, on December 19, 2025, a new expansion based on the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash film, titled ‘From the Ashes,’ will be released.

Community response and the third-person mode

Fans are incredibly excited about the upcoming New Game+ mode and the long-awaited third-person perspective update. One player on Reddit (u/ironalienvb) expressed their joy, saying they’ve been waiting a long time for these features and were thrilled to finally see them announced. They also mentioned looking forward to the new movie based on the game.

Many players reacted with excitement, praising Ubisoft for including both features for free. On the game’s subreddit, fans expressed their enthusiasm with short, enthusiastic comments like “WHAT OMG” and “Thank fck.”

I really appreciate games that continue to receive updates and support long after they’ve been released, like *No Man’s Sky*. *Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora* appears to be taking a similar approach. Instead of immediately creating a brand new game to match the next *Avatar* movie, Ubisoft is adding a significant expansion to the existing game. This strategy is clearly working, as players are still engaged and enjoying the game two years after its initial release.

The state of the game and Ubisoft’s support

Since launching in December 2023, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, created by Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment, has been consistently updated with new content and story expansions.

In April 2024, Ubisoft released Update 3.2 for the game, which included a new performance mode allowing for gameplay at 40 frames per second on both Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, along with other enhancements.

On July 9, 2024, the first big expansion, The Sky Breaker, was released. It introduced the Upper Plains, a new area with a brand-new story, side missions, and things to do.

The second expansion, Secrets of the Spires, was released on November 28, 2024. Though initially planned for November 26, a minor problem caused a short delay. This new content added the Spires of the Clouded Forest to the game, offering players fresh environments and more of Pandora to discover.

On April 15, 2025, Ubisoft launched Update 1.4, which included enhancements to the Hunter’s Guide, a new comic book-style filter for photo mode, fresh designs for ikran, and various gameplay improvements and bug fixes.

Players can look forward to December 2025 with exciting updates! On December 5th, a free update will include highly requested features like third-person mode and New Game+. Then, on December 19th, a major new expansion called ‘From the Ashes’ will be released, coinciding with the premiere of the new Avatar film, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’.

There’s a lot to be excited about for fans, and Ubisoft is consistently releasing new content, which is great to see. If you haven’t tried the game yet, now is a really good time to start. Plus, it’s even made my life easier – my sister loves everything Avatar, so I already know what I’m getting her for Christmas!
