The *Dragon Ball Z* series is incredibly famous and has had a huge impact on pop culture. For many people, it was their first experience with anime, creating a lasting legacy and a special place in their hearts. This is also thanks to the countless memes and fan creations it inspired, like *Dragon Ball Z Abridged* (*DBZA*). Created by Team Four Star, *DBZA* offers a funny, condensed version of the original story we all remember, and it’s packed with memorable lines.
It’s hard to overstate how impressive *DBZA* is. Team Four Star didn’t just edit *Dragon Ball Z*; they completely reimagined it with new lines and a unique style, creating something truly legendary. While we always encourage supporting the original *Dragon Ball Z* and its creators, *DBZA* offers a fresh and hilarious way to enjoy the series. As Team Four Star themselves put it: “This is a parody. Please support the official release.”
10) “We Do However Find It Hilarious”

“We here at Team Four Star do not condone child violence, we do, however find it hilarious.”
-Kaiserneko from Team Four Star
Let’s begin with a quote from the popular web series DBZA, as it appears right at the start. The line comes up as Raditz is about to attack young Gohan – something you wouldn’t typically see in live-action media.
Just as Raditz begins to act, the video pauses for a quick message from Kaiserneko. They want to clarify they’re simply editing the footage, and aren’t intentionally including violence involving children. Though they admit the situation is amusing, the scene then resumes.
9) “Why Didn’t You Dodge!”

“Why… Didn’t… You… Dodge!”
-Piccolo to Gohan
Anyone familiar with *DBZA* will recognize the many recurring jokes throughout the show. These range from playful jabs at Goku’s questionable parenting to Gohan’s surprising difficulty dodging attacks. It often feels like a constant task for the characters – especially Piccolo – to yell at Gohan to simply ‘dodge!’
The story really kicks off when Piccolo starts rigorously training Gohan, and unsurprisingly, it doesn’t go smoothly. He attempts to teach Gohan how to dodge attacks, but things come to a crisis point when Nappa launches a deadly attack aimed at the boy. Gohan seems to have enough time to react, but he freezes and simply watches it approach. Piccolo, not willing to let Gohan get hurt, jumps in front of the attack himself, resulting in a famous line.
8) “I Can Tell the Difference!”

“You’re not meditating, you’re napping. I can tell the difference!”
-Nail to Piccolo
A major and lasting change made by the *DBZA* adaptation of *Dragon Ball Z* involves the character Nail. Fans will recall how Piccolo used a risky technique to absorb Nail, gaining his energy. This was intended as a short-term power-up, with Nail’s consciousness briefly existing inside Piccolo’s mind.
In *DBZA*, Nail doesn’t disappear – he sticks around, and eventually gains some company, but that’s another story. Keeping Nail as a part of Piccolo led to a lot of funny moments and inside jokes. For example, Nail would jokingly call Piccolo out for spending so much time “meditating,” since he’s inside Piccolo’s head and knows what he’s *really* doing.
7) “Find Me In the Alps”

Seriously, why does everything go wrong for me? My life is a disaster, constantly filled with unpleasant, unsuccessful people. It feels like the world enjoys taking advantage of me and putting me in terrible situations – like I’m just a magnet for misfortune.
-Vegeta
Vegeta has a famous angry outburst that was heavily edited when it first aired, leading many to believe he used a lot of strong language. The full, uncensored version actually plays at the very end of the episode, and it’s surprisingly different from what people imagined. While Vegeta is smart, he likely wasn’t deliberately trying to avoid swearing – it just doesn’t fit his personality.
The phrase “find me in the Alps” is a memorable quote from the movie *The Big Lebowski*, and it’s funny to see it pop up in *DBZA* as well. It’s such a great line that it’s used again later in the series. It’s likely many fans have been repeating this quote since it first came out!
6) “Been Studying Theoretical Physics”

“I’ve been studying theoretical physics, although at this point I guess it’s just physics.”
-Gohan
Gohan is caught between his parents’ very different expectations. His mother pushes him to excel academically, while his father wants him to be a powerful fighter. Though they both want what’s best for him, it creates a lot of stress for Gohan.
The show *DBZA* often jokes about Gohan’s studying, with characters frequently calling him a “nerd.” But sometimes, Gohan simply mentions what he’s learning, like in this scene where he talks about theoretical physics. It’s a bit ironic to call it ‘theoretical’ when you’re actually *seeing* these concepts in action, which is what the characters point out.
5) “Gonna Sue Somebody”

“I think Ridley Scott’s gonna sue somebody.”
-Piccolo to Freeza
Freeza was one of the first major villains Goku and his friends battled, and he gave them a truly difficult fight. Several beloved characters were killed before he even transformed into his more powerful forms.
Let’s talk about Freeza’s third form – it bears a striking resemblance to the aliens from Ridley Scott’s *Alien* franchise. Because *DBZA* is a comedy, the show didn’t shy away from having Piccolo directly acknowledge the similarity, essentially pointing out that Freeza looks like an *Alien*.
4) “Sounds Disappointing”

“I Do Not Know What This Yamcha Is… But It Sounds Disappointing.”
-Super Kami Guru to Krillin
Once the crew arrives on Namic, things quickly become hilariously unpredictable. A recurring joke throughout this part of the story is Super Kami Guru’s selective ability to unlock the hidden potential in others – he only does it if he *feels* like it. He refuses to help Nail get stronger, but surprisingly, he’s happy to give Krillin a power boost.
Krillin could really use a power-up, but Super Kami Guru bluntly told him his hidden potential wasn’t very strong. This immediately made Krillin think of Yamcha, and he said something particularly harsh. It makes you wonder if Yamcha, even in the afterlife, felt the sting of those words.
3) “Muffin Button”

“Muffin button”
-Goku
We talked about running jokes in *DBZA* earlier, and one of the most surprising ones involves muffins! It started in the episode “No Country for Old Namekians,” when Goku was traveling to Namek on Dr. Briefs’ spaceship – that’s where the “Muffin Button” first appeared.
I heard the spaceship wasn’t quite ready for the journey, but it *did* have this thing called the “muffin button.” Goku went absolutely crazy pressing it during the trip! The weird part is, Dr. Brief didn’t actually put it in there. Some people even think it accidentally helped with Goku’s training, but that’s a story for another time. Honestly, everyone kept saying “muffin button” so much that it became a running joke for fans of *DBZA*.
2) “I Need an Adult?”

“Um. I need an adult?”
-Gohan
A recurring joke in *DBZA* is Gohan’s repeated desire for a grown-up to help him. This starts right away when Vegeta shows up and immediately fights a child, prompting Gohan to ask for an adult’s assistance. While the initial request is amusing on its own, it quickly becomes a pattern.
Just a few episodes later, Gohan again needed to ask for an adult. This happened when Krillin suggested taking him to Kami Guru to unlock his hidden power. If Krillin had explained it differently, he likely wouldn’t have frightened Gohan again. As expected, Gohan feels he needs a grown-up when he meets Kami Guru – he really can’t seem to get a moment’s peace.
1) “I Am The Hype!”

“I AM THE HYPE”
-Vegeta
One thing *DBZA* does exceptionally well is portray Vegeta’s struggles with anger. He still loses his temper frequently, perhaps even more than before. The show has a knack for exaggerating the defining traits of its characters, and Vegeta is no exception – he’s somehow even more proud, irritable, and condescending. It’s actually quite impressive how consistently they emphasize these aspects of his personality.
Things really come to a point when Trunks arrives, and it’s easy to see why. Goten is initially excited to meet his father, but that feeling doesn’t last. Soon, Trunks starts challenging Vegeta, wondering if he truly lives up to his own reputation. And then, we all know the famous question he asks.
