Throughout its eleven seasons (2010-2022), *The Walking Dead* featured some truly frightening and dangerous villains, with many of their initial appearances becoming iconic moments. The show followed a group of survivors navigating a zombie apocalypse, led by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). This group formed a strong, close-knit family, despite facing constant threats from various antagonists who attempted to break them apart.
Over its eleven seasons and various spin-offs, *The Walking Dead* has featured many memorable villains. However, a few stand out as particularly impactful. Their first appearances are among the show’s best scenes, adding layers to the stories of other characters, reminding us of the series’ origins, and introducing some truly terrifying antagonists. These villain debuts are unforgettable moments in *The Walking Dead*.
7) Shane Walsh

From the very beginning of *The Walking Dead*, with that shocking opening scene, they immediately showed us Rick Grimes and his partner, Shane Walsh, joking around in their police car before everything went crazy. It was a brilliant way to establish their bond – you could really feel their connection as partners. Looking back, it’s amazing to think that Shane would become such a complex villain! His feelings for Lori really consumed him, leading to intense jealousy and ultimately, a desperate attempt to take Rick out.
6) Alpha

Many fans feel *The Walking Dead* declined in quality after Andrew Lincoln left in season 9, though the introduction of the character Alpha (played by Samantha Morton) and her group, the Whisperers, helped to make things a little better. While not perfect, Alpha quickly became one of the show’s most frightening and memorable villains after first appearing in season 9, episode 9, “Adaptation.” In that episode, she unexpectedly finds Alden (Callan McAuliffe) and Luke (Dan Fogler) while they’re searching for other missing people and chillingly tells them, “Trail ends here.”
5) Merle Dixon

Before Shane caused trouble in the early seasons of *The Walking Dead*, Merle Dixon was the show’s initial antagonist. Though he later became a key follower of the Governor, season 1 first introduced viewers to Merle as a prejudiced and unlikeable character. This instantly established Rick as a heroic and commanding leader for the Atlanta survivors, despite Rick joining the group later on. Merle’s development throughout the series made his eventual death surprisingly impactful, a far cry from the immediate dislike he evoked in his first appearance.
4) Leah Shaw

Leah Shaw, played by Lynn Collins, was first introduced in season 10 of The Walking Dead as a potential love interest for Daryl Dixon in the episode “Find Me.” This episode showed what Daryl did during the six-year gap after Rick Grimes left, revealing he developed a connection with Leah, who lived in a cabin and originally owned Dog. They bonded until Leah suddenly disappeared. It was disappointing for fans when Leah later became a full-fledged villain in season 11 of The Walking Dead.
3) Philip Blake, The Governor

Philip Blake appeared to be a strong leader as the Governor of Woodbury, but he was secretly cruel and manipulative. He was a truly frightening villain who kept gruesome trophies, imprisoned his own zombified daughter, and enjoyed tormenting others. His actions culminated in the destruction of the prison and were foreshadowed early on, as seen when he casually killed soldiers in his first appearance.
2) Gareth & Terminus

In *The Walking Dead*, the people of Terminus stand out as particularly horrifying villains. By the time Rick’s group arrived at the end of the railway tracks in season 4, the residents had turned to cannibalism to survive. Led by Gareth (Andrew J. West), Terminus was a disturbing and unsettling place from the start. Even their first encounter with Gareth, in the episode “A,” felt wrong. He lured Rick’s group into a train car and, in the season 5 premiere, “No Sanctuary,” threatened to kill and eat them.
1) Negan Smith

Negan’s first appearance in the season 6 finale of *The Walking Dead* is considered one of the most memorable moments in television history, even though he became a controversial figure – a hero to some, an antihero to others. Throughout season 6, Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, led the Saviors and clashed with communities like Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom. To establish dominance, Negan gathered members from these communities and brutally killed one of them. Abraham and Glenn were his victims, and this shocking scene instantly cemented Negan as *The Walking Dead’s* most terrifying and unpredictable villain – a standout moment in a particularly strong and graphic episode.
